@stux I read it when I was probably about the same age; it was a long time ago and I don't remember. It was touching to read a diary by a girl around my own age living in such a situation. The sex musings are an excuse. The right-wing parents who are challenging so many books in the US no doubt really object because the diary casts Nazis as scary bad guys and ant-Semitic purges as negative things.

@stux The current controversy is not over the diary itself, but a graphic novel adaptation containing sexually explicit content not included in the original book edited by Frank's father.Having been a teenager once, I suspect many 12-15 year olds have various thoughts that are not appropriate for reading aloud in a classroom.

@stux For the same reason that white kids are "Too young to learn about racism" but Black kids their same age are old enough to die from it. Emmett Till was even younger than Anne Frank. 🤷🏿♂️If we look for rational logic or consistent points in these arguments from racists and antisemites, we will not find it. They know that this doesn't make sense. They don't care.We don't have to try to find logic in their arguments. There is no logic in trying to teach their children this type of hate.

@stux I, uh, have to wonder if they're aware of what the actual uncensored Holocaust education for Jewish kids looks like. The Diary of Anne Frank is rather mild compared to learning what Mengele and his ilk would have done with "half-breeds" like me, when I was 10.I think their kids will survive reading the diary of a teenage girl, especially since the diary ends with that last line about the goodness of humanity, before she had a chance to meet people who had no goodness or humanity.

@stux I loved it. NOT in an entertaining way by any means, but because it was a real account of something that a real person went through. I was about 13 the first time I read it.My mom had encouraged me to read it. We talked about it afterwards. My mom and friends' parents had no problem letting me and my friends read a lot of books that would be shocking to people today that someone of such a tender age would read.Some people today are far too eager to censor and ban books and the like.

@stux Have scrolled through all the comments and honestly, I do not get the ones about it not being appropriate for children the same age as Anne was or that it’s even damaging?I think it says a lot about a society where we rather pretend that everything is ok and the world is like a Disney/Hallmark-movie until kids are of age. Then they are bombarded with the truth but it doesn’t really take because they are used to their safe bubble.We have to do better.
