There's a QR code for the buffet menu on this train. It takes me to a website that geoblocks me because I'm roaming and so have a foreign IP address.

@mjg59 These are local snacks for local people. There's nothing for you here!

@mjg59 Why would your cell provider not route you through a domestic exit point?

@vees I've never gotten a local IP when roaming, generally messages are encrypted between you and the origin carrier AIUI

@mjg59 This major inconvenience is brought to you by:The Cloud™Seriously, running local servers is not that hard! Not even on a train!Edit: I just realised they could've just printed the fucking MENU instead of a stupid QR code 🤦‍♂️

@vees it's standard for data to be tunneled back to your home network

@vees @mjg59 because roaming gets routed via your home provider (so they can bill you)

@mjg59 Thanks, I've never experienced that. I either have roaming disabled and/or buy a local SIM for most of my (infrequent) personal travel so I've never experienced that.

@fell not sure how I'd route to a local server given there's no wifi?

@mjg59 I couldn’t pay for parking in the supported app because it didn’t accept I’m on UK phone numbers or post codes for the (mandatory) account creation.A national level parking app, used in big cities. 🤦

@vees @mjg59 in the EU people usually use roaming quite frequently because AFAIK providers are not allowed anymore to charge horrendous amounts for it...

@mjg59 I remember failing to reserve a table at a restaurant in SF because I didn't have a US phone number. This sort of thing is widespread and idiotic. ☹️

@mjg59 Lidl UK's loyalty app thinks my HE IPv6 endpoint (in London) is outside the UK and geoblocks it. (The rant about Virgin Cable *still* not having native v6 support is for another day.)

@vees @mjg59 haha had the exact same issue, it is annoying as hell…And I already guessed it is #Spain without you saying…Also #Interrail? Did you try to use the WIfi? 🙃 Always complain to #renfe, otherwise nothing will change.

@mjg59 something related: I was on a bus in Ravenna, there was a QR-Code which I hoped would show me how to get a ticket (or an app), but all I got was a 404 page not found on the site from the bus operator. And my apple pay didn’t work at the onboard ticket machine.

@mjg59 There is a restaurant near me which has QR codes for ordering. The codes are unique per table but not unique per customer. So the last person to dine at my table can just add to my order and I just have to hope their receipt printer runs out of paper before it finishes itemising all 2,147,483,647 dishes.
