@Moon @eris Pretty sure they can't purchase Nintendo because of some Japanese lawAnd Valve's actual valuation is probably insanely more than Activision-Blizzard, they practically own the PC market, and thanks to Steam not being hostile, will probably hold it for a long ass time

@coolboymew @Moon @eris they have a Japanese subsidiary, pretty sure if they can't buy Nintendo directly they'd be able to do so indirectly. But they'd have to offer the sun and the moon to not be rejected so hard the entire MS board would feel obligated to slit their bellies

@Moon @coolboymew @eris I still think that Nintendo owners from execs down to individual shareholders would counter-offer that Microsoft commit seppuku

@Moon @eris The only scenario in which Microsoft acquires Valve involves the annual Hawaii trip plane disappearing over the Pacific.

@eris @Moon Starfield has to be the least talked massive release I've ever seen, all I'm seeing from it is basically the various fuck ups. They basically started mass purchasing studios just when AAA is really starting to sinkUnfortunately this farce is going to go on for longerhttps://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/square-enix-wants-to-upgrade-some-existing-ips-to-aaa-status/FF16 is being obliterated by Pikmin 4 BTW. 0 lessons learned here

@Moon @coldacid @eris Nintendo is basically making money hand over fist, practically everything they made on Switch is almost a million seller. They're currently the most lucrative player in the industry. Microsoft literally cannot muster enough money to purchase them

@coolboymew @Moon @eris there's a perception that Nintendo is a wholly Japanese company but a lot of stuff happens at their offices in Redmond which is where Microsoft HQ is. Same with The Pokemon Company. Huge employer

@Moon @eris why would he? He's gonna be printing money for a while, whereas MS now only sells gamepass because their studios are expensive crap and the investment on that shit doesn't return.

@olmitch @Moon @eris No but really, I think there was a recent sales leak from that one court document, I cannot find it on /v/ right now, but the software sales that Nintendo has on the Switch are legitimately insaneIf you consider the Mario IP and Pokemon together, those two alone probably surpasses Microsoft's worth

@coolboymew @eris @Moon @coldacid >Microsoft literally cannot muster enough money to purchase themJust to be clear, you're not mixing up yen and dollars, right? Nintendo's market cap is a quarter of Microsoft's revenue. An acquisition with shares would involve like 2-3% of Microsoft's stock. Microsoft is a *massive* cloud services provider that is still making bank on legacy services, they aren't poor by any means.

@birdulon @eris @Moon @coldacid The raw data like this is worthless. Activision-Blizzard was basically floundering and they were purchased at a premium. Nintendo is currently selling hand over fist, has the currently #1 console that they're probably still selling at a profithttps://www.aroged.com/2023/08/03/nintendo-switch-and-3ds-sales-data-on-nintendos-first-and-third-party-ips/Keep in mind that Sony are now porting their AAA games to PC for a reason, so is MS. Meanwhile Nintendo still doesn't need to do thatThey own some of the most valuable IPs in history in good numbers, which includes Pokemon, which is the most valuable IP in historyEven if Microsoft could technically purchase Nintendo, it would be a purchase that the company wouldn't really be able to recover from

@birdulon @Moon @coldacid @eris I saw raw data like this is worthless, because as far as I'm aware Valve is low like that too despite having a nearly complete monopoly on PC gaming. They're worth waaaaay more than that

@coolboymew @birdulon @Moon @eris to tack onto this, estimated future earnings over the period for which a purchasing company would need to pay off bonds, loans, and other sources of cash for the purchase comes into play. Even at Microsoft's size, there's still a lot of financial work that would need to be done ahead of any possible purchase of a company the size of Nintendo or Actizzard in order to be able to mae the purchase in the first place -- and then those you borrowed from want their money back with interest. All of this is pretty irrelevant anyway since protectionist political concerns in Japan would torpedo any attempt at an American company buying a business like Nintendo. (Sega wasn't a concern because it was essentially a gaijin business anyway -- look into its history.)

@coldacid @eris @Moon @coolboymew >and then those you borrowed from want their money back with interest.Yep, good chance that there would just be no business case for it.If they leave things siloed, neither side really gains anything. If they compromise Nintendo exclusivity, high chance it just cannibalizes potential sales and leaves them zero-sum again. The tech stacks are chasms apart, so consolidation opportunities aren't great either. A Switch 2 running some AMD Phoenix SoC would bridge that, but since that's 2023 hardware Nintendo wouldn't consider it until it drops in price in like 2027 :ablobwink: That said, it makes sense that they'd at least be spitballing the idea internally with their grand gaming ambitions.

@coolboymew @eris @Moon @coldacid Nintendo's valuation is naturally going to be a billion percent more accurate than Valve's. It's a publicly traded company, so 1) they report data that allows informed investing decisions and 2) speculators can actually buy in if they think it's undervalued. For Valve, it's just zero-stakes empty speculation.
