"Why Parking Makes Housing More Expensive"Most cities have strict rules -- if you wanna develop a new piece of housing, you have to offer parking, tooThis winds up jacking up the price of housing considerably. Parking is expensive to buildOne study found that providing parking added an average of $34,945 to the cost of building each low-income housing unitMy essay: https://clivethompson.medium.com/why-parking-makes-housing-more-expensive-6c64b0749503A "friend" link in case you're not a Medium subscriber: https://clivethompson.medium.com/why-parking-makes-housing-more-expensive-6c64b0749503?sk=3876a3e658f46c6a9418ff093b155aac

@clive Lots of brand-new modern apartment buildings popping up in San Diego these days offering ZERO parking.

@clive They tried to build housing in downtown Wenatchee right on the river with no parking. It was a failure; few wanted to live there. They were forced by need to put in parking. I think better and more acceptable mass transit would have made the housing more attractive.

@clive Looking at it another way, providing parking robs development of living space.A developer built a two-unit condo near me; the top unit was 3BR, the bottom unit was 2BR w/ a one-car garage. They had the same footprint, but he wound up selling the 2BR with garage for 20% less. Developers can reap more when building to house people rather than cars.
