@stux I'm reluctant to say it, but I think the reason why "daily deaths by gun" continue in the USA is simply that too many people think it's okay--perhaps even normal or acceptable. A fervent minority with enough money and fanatic beliefs seem to be able to outweigh the majority, especially when so many of our politicians are bought and paid for by those who don't mind the daily deaths. For these folks, the price of protecting our people IS daily gun deaths.Never said they were rational.

@stux Pretty much daily deaths by gun in Sweden these days. We regulate firearms quite extensively but criminals use illegal firearms. The laws mostly affect law-abiding citizens of course.

It is the 2nd amendment. And it was written to ensure a militia was in the hands of each individual state and not at the federal level so states could defend themselves against the federal government. More broadly, it is there so citizens can defend themselves against government. If the government had only single barrel rifles, that would suffice. But even the police has increasingly powerful weapons. So in the spirit of that law, citizens should be able to have equal firepower. A wise choice given that every dictator starts by disarming the population if that isn't already the case.

@stux i blame 9/11 and the way this country fell apart afterwards leaving those of us who were young without a past and the boomers who were our parents refusing to relinquish control for a future. We've had terrorism and large avoidable death tolls on us soil since then, but the 9/11 wounds never healed. Is it really so bad to be nostalgic and yearn for a time before 9/11 with what we learned taken with us? America: DOA since sept. 11 2001. Thanks a lot, Bush.

@stux it's funny how cars kill roughly as many people as guns in the US, 2/3 of gun deaths are suicides, and cars are not Constitutionally protected, but I have never seem comparable discourse around them - no calls to ban them all immediately, how X is a death cult (perhaps the UAW?), etc.

@gvs @jan @stux Realistically, citizens can't have equal firepower. It's not 1800s anymore, not even 1900s. Modern wars are not being fought face to face with rifles and automatic weapons. I don't see how they could fight the US government if it comes to this. So I don't see this as a viable option to protect against the dictatorship. If anything, armed para-military groups are threat to democracies who are less willing to spill blood than dictators.
