Amazon new employee’s log #3Dear diary, Amazon just texted me to remind me that my first day of work starts soon. It also reminded me to out paperwork before my day 1. It makes me ponder… have other employers started doing this or is this to cater to the 20-somethings who need a reminder that their fist day of “school” starts soon? 🤔P.S. they ALSO sent an email telling me the same thing

@apple_dumplin @PhoneBoy I work for a very large flavoring corporation and this kind of thing was also a part of my on boarding a year ago. Most of the people I work with barely speak English and are all horrible with computers. This sentiment extends into managerial roles. Out of the 15 people I directly work with on a daily only two are zoomers and then a handful including myself are millennials.

@apple_dumplin this sounds like standard enterprise IT to me. I'd be willing to bed it's an automated process with little to no human interaction, very litter "catering" or other human thought involved.

@apple_dumplin it's a scale problem. You can't have a manual process when there are so many people employed at amazon.To be fair, I've worked in enterprise software as a consultant software engineer, and the fact that anything works at all is proof that god exists, and that he's smiling upon us.

@apple_dumplin @PhoneBoy I think generally society has shifted toward a more coddling approach. I think indemnification is part of it. And then the other part is the march toward socialism/communism that seems to be picking up pace. I had an epiphany at the burger joint last night. Teenager giving us our food. We wanted extra sauce & the dude looked like he was gonna collapse/cry at the request. I ignored him selling the agony of being requested to do something and magically he got through it.

@makeheroism @PhoneBoy Good Lord! 😆 I believed it though! Whatever dumbing down in schoolThey’re doing is certainly working. Also a o thing that is playing a roll in this reminding thing out to employees is that I’ve heard that the employers aren’t having a lack of applicants…but when it comes to them showing up after them being hired is the bigger issue.

@apple_dumplin @DuffMcWhalen I think they spam the notifications out every possible way, because there has been a fragmentation of communications channels. Email, text, voicemail on cell phone, voicemail on home phone, etc. etc.Also Amazon employs a lot of part timers, who likely have other jobs as well. Or are also applying for numerous other jobs.Our attention is splintered.

@apple_dumplin This over-reminding seems to extend to any kind of appointment or event too. I went to a concert a couple of weeks ago and they sent no less than 12 emails about it. I just need one with my tickets and any pertinent info like parking, thanks. But if someone has to be reminded that many times to go to work and when, that's much more concerning!

@apple_dumplin @PhoneBoy so the last time I was looking for a job I had a theory that companies were falsely posting jobs. I think it has to do with internal budgets.I think they post jobs with no intention of hiring externally. And then it shows that on the books that they have openings and they save money because they allocate more money to “new hires” vs “internal transfers” or whatever. This is just what I’ve noticed from the two fairly large companies I’ve been with.
