What I love about my Pixel 4a phone:-$300 when new-1080p- I could #degoogle it (grapheneOS)- after degoogle, the battery lasted for days- GCam sideload makes the camera pretty good- small (>70mm wide & 150g)What I don't love:-security updates end this month-battery life is diminishing QUICKLYHow to upgrade from perfection? I just want a pocket friendly photo shooter that doesn't contact a remote server a dozen times a minute. It will mostly sit on my kitchen table, ignored.(cont.)

(cont.)It seems my options are 3:1. buy a phone I don't want that will run a rom I do. So a supported device for Graphene, Calyx, LineageOS.2. buy a phone I DO want that has a custom rom on XDA forums (or some other source?) The Asus Zenfone 9 meets my specs and has at least one mod running no GApps/microG, but installing sounds daunting for my tech level.(cont.)

(cont.)-buy whatever phone I want (perhaps Sony Xperia 10 V) and use ADB to disable as much shit as I can without breaking a retail version of Android. Safest but possibly incomplete solution.Anybody out there that can share a little perspective on this struggle I'm forcing on myself?

@NoSir @IceCubeSoup Following.I'm in about the same situation. I like my GrapheneOS equipped Pixel 4, but after dropping it in the lake, while I'm happy it didn't die on me, I have noticed it will lose all connectivity about once a day, and won't restore until the phone is restarted, meaning I could miss all sorts of calls and messages when I'm not paying attention. So I'm very much looking for a suitable replacement.

@NoSir Disabling as much is unfortunately not enough. As long as there is Google backbone there, uncontrollable spying is easy both for Google and for other apps that want to use its structure. Only really safe Android is open source version w/o any form of Goog services and apps and, very important - without any Google identity associated with it. On such system even (non Goog)apps that would spy on you have no traction, no Goog to grab on, no identity to grab on.

@MaleticResearch that's how I thought it was. I was hoping someone would chime in and tell me I'm wrong. In the end that's what it's all about for me; I'm not trying to hide from the feds, I just want my data fragmented enough that it's hard to build a profile on me without combining data sets from my telecom provider, VOIP provider, and VPN provider. And the google account is the part ties all that together into a simple package.

@IceCubeSoup holy crap, those phones are huge! For the money I think I would take a Pixel 6a and do the Graphene thing again

@CattleBaron now THAT is a phone. I wonder if the carriers are still running their scam where you can only use devices they have whitelisted as VoLTE compatible? That's how they forced me off my old phone in 2021, not whitelisting the device despite its full compliance with their spec.
