While baraag has remained closed as invite-only, the server is now hitting its limits and I am left with no choice but to make another upgrade soon to keep us running smoothly. The new server I am eyeing will increase my monthly cost by an additional $300 USD, an amount that I can bear for a short while before it stops being financially sustainable for me. I hate to make a plea for donations but if you can spare anything to my SubscribeStar or pixivFANBOX pages, I would be forever grateful.

@satori I can only think of one piece of advice that could be helpful at the moment: The Lemmy instance https://burggit.moe has a storage service https://shota.nu for their media, they have the same liberal rules on art as us. See if you can encourage some creators to upload there and link their media here? Maybe talk with their team to see if they can help, there's a Matrix channel let me know if you're interested in a link.

@satori One possibly obvious suggestion: If the situation remains dire over the next days, make a new announcement and suggest those who are willing to enable post auto-deletion. I'd recommend 2 years: That should be enough to free up some space, while typically nothing is found and missed after such a long period of time.Two instances on which I run media posting bots asked me to enable it last year as they were running out of space: It seems to be a limitation much of the fediverse ran into.

@satori i really wish i could help but im not in the best position to do so, perhaps it would be posible to make some sort of premium service like twitter does? it could be something like 5 dollars a month! failry cheap so many people can affortd it and maybe that would motivate people to get it and support baraag, baraag has grow so i think it would be a good idea to expand in that regard

@satori Here's an idea to generate some alternative revenue as well. I know you can't do ads for revenue, but you could try selling "announcement advertisements" to artists.I'm sure some people would pay for you to announce to every baraag user about their commissions being open or something similar.Or like a paid "artist spotlight".Thoughts?

@satori what's the total monthly cost now? Would is possibly be better to rent a rack and buy a server?I have a server rack at Hurricane Electric in Fremont, CA, $400/mo for a gigabit drop and 20A power, I can scale up with no extra costs outside of hardware. Could be worth looking into, especially since used servers can be dirt cheap sometimes.Good luck, friend

@satori imo you should probably delete posts over a year old and from inactive accounts. Let the rich image hosts deal with storing art for longer like pixiv. Or maybe you can introduce a tier that keeps your posts permanent for a price, though I'm not sure how receptive that would be. Probably not very heh.

@satori I don't understand, how much is Subscribe Star charging in fees?Your Pixiv said 2023 costs should be $560/mo or so for the server and the email service. Adding $300 to this would be $860. But I'm showing $1315 in support on SubscribeStar, plus who knows how many supporting on Pixiv. Even a 20% payment processing fee would leave over $1k a month in income.Are you losing more than 20% of the support you receive to platform/payment fees? That's insane if you are.

@InvincibleSugar I need to update my pixivFANBOX but I now have additional cost since the start of 2023, of which includes an automated backup service (in the event that baraag goes down or has its plug pulled, all posts & its content can be restored to another server) and remote media storage service to offload the worry of every running out of disk space on the server itself. Both these services keep increasing in cost as more media files are hosted.

@Bobetap @satori Starting new instance under same domain should be almost a noop, but migration from mastodon that allows to retain access to old content would require to map data to different persistence layout and either implement custom authentication to work with old hashes, or perform an instance-wide password reset. To also allow old content to remain federatable, an id correspondence will have to be stored somewhere during migration and a simple translation service using that information added to the reverse proxy. All could take several weeks to implement and test out at leisurely pace, but probably worst of all, it will also remove the justification for more gibs.
