Why does my Raspberry Hotspot running on pi-star needs to have a Samba Server running? Yes, it's possible but it can also run a LDAP server. #hamradio #pistar

@rhaen Tell me more. I have had a PI-STAR setup as long as it exists, it has been operating almost flawlessly, and I don't even know what a Samba Server is.

@PA0ETE I think complaining is highly unfair to MW0MWZ. He did all the best to make it a working product. There are several vendors that entirely rely on his distribution and it's very well supported. So all the kudos to them. But it's also a common pattern that we see here - sacrificing for comfort/ease of use. Let me check what's in there.

@rhaen I wrote I didn't know what it was, because the thing is called a Sambar Server if I am not mistaking :) But that is not a big issue. You can also use the parts of the system separately. For example the D-STAR part I know well can also be started command line. And you could install a separate dashboard with that. Before PI-STAR, I used the suite of Western D-STAR, and before that the distro that G4KLX distributed for D-STAR only. This is part of PI-STAR now, but can be startede separately.

@PA0ETE So, he is doing a great job. I am just wondering about a few topics: Pistar repositories have no license files in it. So - I consider it in a grey area - and I am not really comfortable with that. It's also part of the forum and has never been closed. Reference: https://forum.pistar.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2271

@rhaen I have owned a D-STAR hotspot for 10 years or so. It is 37W and has an antenna at 12 m heigh. To me it is a possibility to communicate on D-STAR a bit more comfortable than on the edge of the range of the nearest repeater. I switched to PI-STAR when it became available. It was so much more easy to install and maintain, I never gave it a 2nd thought. I am very much for open source, but not everyone who can program understands this enough to comply with everything.

@rhaen I know of two 'derivatives' of PI-STAR (one Spanish, one American), I don't know they have evolved to become something like a fork yet, but they might also have objections to this and do or try to do this better. Apart from the proprietary and system specific OpenSpot software, I don't think there is a real alternative though.

@rhaen My Dashboard: http://dm.shorties.be The system consists of a D-STAR hotspot on 70 cm and a multiband FM repeater with output on 2 m which doesn't have it's own dashboard. At the same location I also have a 10m beacon on 28,302 MHz.

@PA0ETE I entirely agree - I also highlight that pistar is working excellent. Now it's on me to decide if I want to go that route or if I want to be on my own. Use mmdvmhost and @DG9VH dashboard. (And probably live with some quirks)
