The fact that setting up a shared-file arrangement between phone and laptop (etc) is so fkn complicated, in a world with ubiquitous networking, is stupid and criminal. I'm discounting proprietary stuff like Google Docs as too rapacious (which doesn't allow login on Firefox in GrapheneOS, it appears).I'm reduced to a USB stick for file in/out on the phone, or email attach like it's 1995. Android File Transfer doesn't work with Graphene OS. This is nuts.

@tomjennings My current solution on Android is PC > Dropbox > Phone. Which would fail the proprietary test. On my todo list is to replace Dropbox and Android. I am considering running a Seafile server out of my house and then figuring out an offsite backup solution.

@tomjennings KDE Connect worked for me, but obv you need a Linux computer for that

@jeremiah While I'll pick at nextCloud/ownCloud, I'll probably just use Markor and if I'm on the road and feel exposed, figure out where the .md file is and email attach it. Sheesh. For general backup, I have the cheapest Synology NAS (DS220 I think), on our wifi lan, and have an account at rsync.net. THEY ARE GREAT! Nice ssh piped rsync backup and reasonable pricing.

@tomjennings I use the same tool for all network file transfers. Laptop, gaming PC, phone, security system...SSH is pretty damn universal! (I do occasionally also use my Nextcloud server, sometimes that's easier for moving a bunch of small files)

@tomjennings @dantescanline it is nuts, though most of that particular shit fractal is apple's fault i thinkif we're talking local network here.. have you tried kde connect? it has a function that lets you push/receive files, and another that just lets you browse device contents (with permission). it's working very well for me for all sorts of stuff, and it supports things other than kde, despite its nameother than that, syncthing, though some people report battery issues and it can be weird to figure out how not to accidentally sync an empty folder over existing stuff and delete things you didn't intend to

@tomjennings I have a DS220 for backups right now. Dropbox is a holdover that I haven't migrated away from. Rsync.net. thank you! I have been wracking my brain for what the service I intended to use was called.

@tomjennings I think it is because the phone enshittifiers want to block us from using the phone as a computer, and especially from accessing it's file system like a file system, without seeing ads and having to pay extra for living.

@tomjennings OMG! This is so true! It drives me nuts!I set up a system with a file system called X-plore it connects to my LAN wirelessly and to my Android TV box. But it still isn't as easy as it should be.

@sdubinsky I'd tried it at someone suggestion -- maybe yours? but found some aspect cumbersome... I'll have to revisit it.

@sdubinsky Oh no apologies! Syncthng is good, it requires a different work flow than I'd like is all.
