@lanodan @ocean @coolboymew it's ogrethinkpads are now somehow worse than the crummiest consumer laptops. lenovo's entire QC team must only exist to meet their quota of employees with disabilities, cause everyone on it is legitimately retarded.at work we couldn't get our normal choice of HP elitebooks and zbooks during the coof and settled for thinkpads. at least a quarter of them had to be sent in for warranty repairs within a couple months, the docking stations never worked right so every morning there were multiple tickets in about monitors not working. unplug it a few times, reboot, rub it counterclockwise while standing on one foot, try and align it with the moons of saturn, attempt firmware updates and driver updates/rollbacks in vain, nothing changed and they'd break again tomorrow. people went back to 4-6 year old HP elitebooks that were beat to shit and had batteries that couldn't last an hour. some of em probably got thrown in the e-waste before the warranty was even up they were so bad.i had a personal thinkpad i got for cheap a long time before that, and even then it was mediocre at best. the good memories folks have must come from back when they were owned by IBM.

Furthermore, the cost is so minimal there's no excuse for USB3 speeds to not be standard on all phones. It's not like you're dealing with complicated I/O handling multiple ports, it's just one.

Plus laptops are easy to ship, and people can bring them occasionally to the office if they wantI have bought desktop/laptops on and off a lot in the last few years and you can pretty much get a laptop of the power of a desktop for not that much more, with the latest cards and all thatHowever, the shells are plasticy garbage, but surprisingly, very little hardware problems or shell problems from the work gamer laptops. For normal office work we used some intel whitebooks, some Asus, etc.I avoid the fuck out of HP and the usual office bullshit

If it weren't for the fact that UI scaling is now thankfully standard almost everywhere it would make interfaces unusably small, and I usually have to cut games' resolution in a full half for the hardware to cope (though render scale is thankfully also becoming standard and helping a lot here too).

@lanodan @ocean @coolboymew i expect laptops to work, even if they're less powerful and don't last as long as desktops. that only starts to really happen above $2000-2500. it'll come with the discrete workstation GPU, reasonable processor/RAM/storage, 1920x1080 or better screen, and likely the sort of 3 year warranty where you just open a ticket they'll overnight you the part and/or sent a tech to your office the next business day to repair it.i also expect docks to work. the occasional need to unplug either the power cord or the USB-C connector is fair, but daily problems with one or more displays or USB peripherals not connecting are unacceptable. so far there's been one of the dell docks, the cube shaped HP thunderbolt dock G2, and the microsoft surface dock have met my expectations.laptops for work are wonderful, if you need one. the convenience of having your shit on one machine that can be physically moved around outweighs the slight performance hit and occasional need for an unexpected reboot. with everything being cloud hosted and accessed through the browser these days, combined with aggressive idle timeouts and MFA requirements, a single machine that just seemlessly goes from my desk at home to my desk at the office to completely usable sitting on a switch in a network closet somewhere is soooo worth it.completely in-office folks obviously need a desktop and access to check out one of a few shared conference laptops, but i say completely WFH folks should be issued a desktop, monitors, and a teleworker gateway.

@mischievoustomato Maybe I'm too old and my eyes have deteriorated enough that I just can't appreciate it, but my desktop screen is 27" 1440p and it's plenty sharp enough to the point where I have to get too close and pixel hunt to find anything to complain about. 2880x1800 on 13" feels to me like it's a waste of precious battery.Not that I'm complaining too much about the computer, it's been great so far, battery life has been adequate despite the resolution and OLED, even on linux. Biggest issue is that it's too much heat in a small case and as a result gets skin burning hot when pushed.

@lanodan @ocean @coolboymew there is an extra battery down there, and it does lock on so it's usable as an ordinary laptop or a tablet. it's just a key on the keyboard to release it, and it won't do it if an application is using the nvidia card, unless you press and hold for the emergency disconnect.also the charger cord/docking cord will plug straight into the tablet-lid so it's still usable if there's a problem with the base.it's a clever, well executed design, but QC was just not their strength. and until the newest ones, they're impossible to repair or upgrade.

The TrackPoint is a rare feature and the best pointer on them... except other laptops have better touchpads, and the Tex Shinobi's TrackPoint blows the Lenovo ones out of the water.But that's ok, because ThinkPads are built with serviceability in mind unlike consumer jun- wait what's that? One of the SODIMMs is soldered? Who cares, I can still get 40GB running at a lower frequency because of mismatched memory channels, nobody should want 64GB anyway, ThinkPad Master Race!

I can't speak to the true IBM days which may well be peak ThinkPad for all I know.Some impressions may well be people buying used 2007 business laptops in 2015 and thinking the brand is an outlier in the market rather than that the market has changed.

Ultrabooks are not meant for the rigors of 8 hours a day, 5 days a week usage, their tiny fans have to spin extra fast to compensate for the quick heat build up in their small cases and the bearings wear out, the hinges are smaller and weaker and they're extra annoying to service for tasks that in-house IT used to be able to do quickly. Oh and the batteries are smaller and as such their capacity drops to inadequate levels faster. Ultrabooks are fine for personal computers, they're just not work machines; just like you wouldn't bring a sports car to haul cargo.Current job's asked me when hiring me what laptop I wanted, I asked an HP Elitebook 840 G9. Thing's been stable and reliable so far.

@sapphire @ocean @coolboymew @skylar IIRC the Air has only 2 USB-C ports and no Ethernet.Meaning OS development, specially networked-focused isn't going to be a thing you can comfortably do with it.And you'd probably need to offload any slightly heavy compilation to another machine due to the shitty thermals of the Air, meaning you'd pretty much need to have access to an actual machine (quite like sysadmins typically do with connecting to servers).

@lanodan @coolboymew @ocean @skylar And, don't take this as a retreat from.... whatever point you're making..... but we ARE talking about a 1000 dollar budget laptop, and we need to keep in mind that unless you're an unemployed loser, this won't be your only PC. Hell, at 1000 dollars, it wouldn't even be my only laptop but I actually have a job that provides a much better one. I do absolutely believe that for anything a normal human being would want to do, it's the best purchase at that budget point. If you're not a power user and it'll be your only non mobile OS computing device, it'll more than handle your taxes, light gaming usage, normie social media, and occasional facetime with the grandkids. If you're a power user, it fits extremely well in the "I really want something with a terminal I can take with me, but I also don't want to be married to one of the 7 wall outlets in the airport" niche that your T420 or whatever crusty unemployed basement dwellers recommend.
