Anyone got tips on finding places with outdoor dining in the SF Bay Area?Searching Google Maps for "outdoor dining" isn't reliable any more, because it frequently seems to show places that had outdoor dining during the peak acknowledging-the-pandemic era and have since gone back to indoor only

@simon I don't think it's absurd. Reserved an "outside" table for fam at a place last week came to find a cozy table on a covered deck with 4 walls, so pretty much inside. Stressful dinner.

@simon when we go to pillar point we'd usually eat at the fish places outdoors next to the pier. Food is "ok". Not sure if you're going to get over the hill back to the bay side but we had a wonderful meal at Bistro Vida in Menlo Park and that was a nice outdoor seating area. My knowledge is more San Jose facing where our regular spots are Sushi Confidential (in campbell and san jose), San Pedro square, Pho 90 degrees in viet town (most of viet town mall has outdoor seating). A new place called Serious Dumpling just opened in San Jose with outdoor seating as well. (most of the restaurants on san pedro avenue have outdoor areas since the street was made pedestrian only)

@simon Foursquare has a filter for "outdoor seating" although no guarantee anyone has checked that option for any place that has it, and I get the feeling their data is increasingly out of date (here, anyway).

@simon I've been considering building a local map for Alameda for a couple years to aggregate niche and/or more detailed data. Now that the Overture data is out, I have less excuses for bringing this to life.It feels absurd to build something for outdoor dining, but there's so much data that is beyond generic scope of a universal mapping app. Am exciting for more nuanced stuff.

@simon @brainwane I’ve noticed that google maps has gotten much worse across the board recently. I often try to search for businesses with the “open now” filter (like only dinner places open late or places open for lunch etc)Almost always now when I do such a search and scroll at all in the map and select a business being shown - it’s closed. Only suggestion I have isn’t a great one which would be to look for places that had outdoor dining pre-pandemic but not sure how to search for that
