Why doesn't Apple make a TV? They would own that space. Half the people I know would happily buy one, if it meant no spyware, user choice, and never buying another "smart" TV again. Even if the cost was 2x normal smart tv.

I don't think they could get the big panels they want/need. Sony's not gonna part with their top tier OLEDs

@feld @briankrebs Sony doesn't make any of the OLED panels they use in their TVs, they buy them from LG and Samsung like everyone else.

"LG Display" is a manufacturing arm of LG for panels. It's not quite the same as LG itself.Sony does manufacture panels, but they're the small ones or for professional/medical environments. e.g., the micro-OLED panels in the Apple Vision Pro are manufactured by Sony.And also if the panels that Sony sources are identical to the panels put in other TVs they wouldn't be consistently rated higher. Why wouldn't LG keep the best panels for their TVs?

@feld Sony doesn’t make OLED panels. They source WOLED from LG Display and QD-OLED from Samsung Display. Those are the only two TV OLED panel suppliers.

Sony does actually make OLED panels, like those in the Apple Vision Pro. Small ones. They are the leaders in Micro-OLED.

the real question is "if the panels are all the same because they come from LG Display, why do Sony's TVs keep winning in display quality tests"
