       Lots of chatter about how Mastodon needs good News and Sports communities to attract users. As if the users are not responsible for building the communities?

       @dkiesow I think what people are reacting to is the near-absence of news organizations and sports media on Mastodon. We can talk news and sports all we want, but it's helpful to have something to bounce off of.

       @dankennedy_nu some do want newsrooms specifically but even that is going to depend on there being users first.

       @dkiesow If journalism had even a tiny clue about this, it would be doing what it could to bring the users with them, not expect them to show up here first. The passivity of journalism orgs would be astounding if it wasn't so predictable (and sad). @dankennedy_nu

       @dangillmor @dankennedy_nu I was one of the first newsrooms on Twitter, connected an RSS feed and no one cared and no one gave permission. Now it is institutionalized and impossible for staff to innovate without executive support.

       @dkiesow @dangillmor @dankennedy_nu I’m not sure it would be all that valuable to have news organizations on Mastodon before we have appropriate quoting functionality. People want to spin off news in their personal timeline, not to be responding to an institution that won’t answer.

       @anderspuck @dangillmor @dankennedy_nu Tech is a negotiation - consumer use/demand drives the features. Waiting does not work.

       @dkiesow @anderspuck @dangillmor A lot of news organizations and journalists who are absent from Mastodon are showing up on Threads. It seems increasingly clear that Threads is going to be the new go-to place, even if the social media landscape will be more diffuse than it was before.

       @dankennedy_nu @dkiesow @dangillmor I think so too, but hopefully Meta will deliver on their promise of bringing ActivityPub to Threads. In that case, it's fine for me that most people are on Threads, because those of us that prefer Mastodon can stay here and not miss out.

       @anderspuck @dankennedy_nu @dangillmor That’s the best outcome.

       @anderspuck Let's hope the Threads support of ActivityPub isn't part of an elaborate embrace, extend, extinguish sequence... @dankennedy_nu @dkiesow
