A little bit of internet history. Firefox 1.0 (project name "Phoenix") was released on November 9th 2004. On December 2nd 2004 this print ad was published in the German national newspaper FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). Over 2400 people have donated nearly $60.000 at the time for this campaign. I was one of them (line 4).These were exciting times. When you open your favourite browser today, think about how the world would look like without a free browser.#Firefox #Mozilla #FOSS

@louis Ich habe das Teil ab ca. Version 0.9.1 verwendet – bzw. verwenden wollen, war wegen der häufigen Abstürze etwas "gewöhnungsbedürftig"... 😊

@louis Cool, my name is on there, too! I remember using it when it was still called Firebird, which was changed to Firefox for trademark reasons. Taking this into account, the name Thunderbird makes more sense.

@louis Isn't it a shame what became of #Mozilla, with them (ab?)using donation money for almost everything BUT #Firefox development... https://lunduke.locals.com/post/4387539/firefox-money-investigating-the-bizarre-finances-of-mozilla

@probono Oh yes I fully agree. I have read that post and it seems to prove what was my impression of Mozilla for quite a while. They turned into a commercial entity at some point, being funded and by extension run by Google at el.Too bad, because with all that money we could really create a free and open internet and stop the W3C to release more and more standards that clearly serve particular interests of the big tech industry. But as long as we are able to freely connect with each other using the IP protocol, there is room for initiatives to create new commercial-free spaces and protocols. There is a reason why NNTP is increasing in popularity. Gemini could have had potential but they made some design mistakes and essentially froze the protocol too early. But there is always hope!

@louis @probono One of the reasons I use Firefox is that it isn't from Google. Perhaps Google also has an incentive to ensure that a browser not from Google continues to exist. As for the speakers and political organizations - with goals like "rally citizens" and "shape the agenda," I find such expenditures not "bizarre" but fitting. These political actions are claimed to "alienate a large portion of [Mozilla's] user base," but they will conversely welcome others, who are not mentioned. "Action research" is claimed to be a mystery, but I found a Wikipedia article about it in five seconds.Sadly my opinion of Mr. Lunduke has suffered more from reading this piece than my opinion of Mozilla.

@jaredj @probono Lunduke nowadays is all about clickbait and getting subscriptions for his Locals monetization platform. His views are often exaggerated but somtimes he puts the finger on the spot.Mozilla became a corporate entity, disguising as a political activist group. This is how they keep their donations up. Because what they do and what they tell are two different things.I remember "fondly" when I once started Firefox after an update and got shown a banner from Mozilla with the text "It is good to be gay". While I do not disagree with the message they tried to convey, I have a strong opinion that a FOSS browser (and by extension a computing environment) should be a "politics-free" zone. With the exception of the FOSS issue itself.I have no issue with Mozilla releasing paid products, by all means they should use their user base to create and montize on innovation. But, is Pocket (which was acuired) and a VPN (from which I understand they do not even self-operate) really "innovation"?Whatever, Mozilla is a controversial issue. Firefox is still my daily driver because everything "just works" - despite the massive amount of telemetry it transmits to Mozilla.
