“The year is 2031. India is flooded with refugees displaced by rising sea levels that have submerged their homes in coastal regions. Environmental catastrophe has caused the fish stocks to disappear and with them local livelihoods and a protein staple.Anbu is the eldest daughter of Selvi and Munusamy, a now out of work traditional fisherman. Shortly after being forcibly removed to an inland refugee camp, Munusamy is killed in a tragic accident. Selvi, desperate for money to support her younger children, arranges for Anbu to be taken Bengaluru on her 18th birthday to join one of the many megabrothels that have sprung up since India, on the advice of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and international NGOs, fully decriminalised the prostitution industry four years earlier…”https://nordicmodelnow.org/2023/09/09/book-review-object-of-desire-by-brooks-anderson/

@ninafromcanadaeh https://portside.org/node/9496/printable/printAmnesty has given a gift to pimps and prostitution users and in doing so, it has become a major donor to some of the most violent scum of the earth. In its callous and flagrant disregard for survivors, Amnesty has corrupted its core mission - to defend the rights of the most vulnerable. Amnesty has awarded a dignity to pimps and prostitution users they could get no place else. Amnesty has done this in the name of protecting women. Tell them “Not in our name!”

@ninafromcanadaeh https://www.feministcurrent.com/2016/06/16/emily-bazelon-amnesty-whitewash-prostitution-indigenous-women/The full decriminalization of prostitution has received considerable mainstream media attention of late: On May 5, the New York Times published an article by Emily Bazelon called, “Should Prostitution be a Crime?” and on May 26, Amnesty International formally adopted a position in favour of the total decriminalization of prostitution.Neither Bazelon’s article nor Amnesty International’s “sex work” policy take into meaningful account the ways in which prostitution functions as a system of colonialism that disproportionately targets Indigenous women and girls. Through these policies and positions, prostitution is sanitized and whitewashed into “sex work,” leaving Indigenous women and girls and our sisters of colour to deal with the consequences.

@ninafromcanadaeh https://www.feministcurrent.com/2015/08/21/an-open-letter-to-amnesty-international-from-an-indigenous-woman/Dear Amnesty International,As I read the words of your 2004 titled “Stolen Sisters: A Human Rights Response to Discrimination and Violence Against Indigenous women in Canada”, I cannot help but find myself in a contradiction. You see, I admire the commitment Amnesty International once had to fighting against oppression towards my Indigenous sisters. You fought hard for a national inquiry into the missing and murdered Aboriginal women of Canada. You brought this issue to the attention of people around the world. Though your efforts have been largely ignored by the Canadian federal government, they have not gone unnoticed by Indigenous women, such as myself, in Canada.
