It's amazing how many open source bros will come out of the woodwork to mansplain at you if you make a fairly uncontroversial statement like "it'd be nice if they changed the name of that photo editor to something that wasn't an ableist perjorative", and yet, here we are.

"Well, *we* don't see anything wrong with it"You wouldn't. Next."If you want to change it you can just fork it."Or you could stop being obtuse. Next."It would be too much work!"And yet, you just asked disabled people to do that work. Next."But muh BRAND RECOGNITION!"Believe me, your brand already sucks. We're trying to help you make it suck less. NEXT.

@tess the biggest shock to me was how quickly git managed to turn around adding an option to change the default branch name from "master" to "main" (or whatever you want it to be). I assumed they would drag their feet forever.

@dierksenI'm no English native speaker but isn't git itself a pejorative term? I cannot fathom how it compares to GIMP, though.@tess

@fluchtkapsel @dierksen @tess calling someone a "git" is roughly analogous to calling them a "bastard" in British English. It's generally viewed as being 'softer' version of that insult though.

@chrissnThat's very old fashioned. I haven't seen someone use "git as a pejorative" for 20 years or more. Not quite there with cad, bounder or spiv, but heading that way![Edited to clarify subject.]@fluchtkapsel @dierksen @tess

@Homebrewandhacking @fluchtkapsel @dierksen @tess It's certainly less popular nowadays. Also I suspect it maybe has a rural bent. These things tend to get detoxified with time. I believe "Nice" was originally an insult in old / middle English. It meant something like vacuous.

@chrissn @Homebrewandhacking @dierksen @tess But what about the word "gimp"? I'm now in my mid-40s, I thought of myself as being quite proficient in the English language but the discussion around the graphics program was the first time I ever heard of this other meaning. How prominent is the slur 'gimp' actually nowadays?

@fluchtkapsel @chrissn @Homebrewandhacking @dierksen when I was growing up, we definitely used it. It's still used in a more descriptive way (as "gimpy") but it's still associated with disability.Calling someone "a gimp" would be incredibly rude, but I would 100% expect to still hear it in the break room at the supermarket I used to work at. We also used to routinely call each other "faggot" and "retard" so, that's the level of class you're dealing with there.

@tess @fluchtkapsel @chrissn @dierksen Seems to be some confusion? I'm talking about "git" which is why I put that posters name first to indicate I was talking to them about that. I included everyone else below as part of the comment chain.I am perfectly prepared to believe that gimp is an ablist slur, that is frequently used, but my associations are more "mask" and "suit" which _also_ make it terrible branding.

@tess For real, though. If one is a computer programmer and not comfortable with changing the names of things, they’re going to have a lot of problems.

@grantzero @tess *looks around* yeah nobody still calls it BIOS, right? 🙄More seriously you'd be surprised how ossified programmers can be...See also https://flameeyes.blog/2022/10/12/inclusive-language-inclusive-documentation/
