So the CDC is proposing limiting updated COVID vaccine availability to those 75 years of age & older, & the immunocompromised (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/your-fall-guide-to-covid-rsv-and-flu-vaccines)This is… absolutely not how vaccines or public health work, & I'm honestly genuinely baffled & terrified about the direction of this country. @Wolven So I just submitted a comment. The form asks for your email, name, phone, city, state, and zip code. And THEN below that it says "Do not submit personally identifiable information through this form."Argh!Only first and last name are required. Just leave the rest blank, I guess.

@Wolven WTF even is this policy? Is it an attempt to get make everyone else pay some exorbitant price for the vaccine? Or are they outright trying to refuse others access to the vaccine? Without a very clear explanation and scientific rationale that seems very weird. Just for a comparison, here in Quebec, Canada the new vaccine, which is meant to be available in October, is recommended for people over 60, the elderly and the immuno-compromised but is available to other people who want it and there's also a , very mild, push to get more people to get the flu vaccine this fall too (the campaigns haven't started yet, they're usually timed for a bit later in the season).https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-public-health-booster-vulnerable-people-1.6944681

To be clear: this isn't in stone. This is someone on the FDA recommendations panel saying what they're recommending to the FDA. It could still change and be implemented differently. Make noise about it and push for that change, now.

@kissane @steveportigal This is exactly my current major problem:He's a member of the recommendations panel, talking loudly, often, and in public about his view, and if there's anything we should have learned in the last 4 years, it's that science communication is a massive component of how public health works, or fucking Doesn't.So while i'm super glad his perspective is likely not to win out in the official guidance, he's still out here having an impact on how these agencies deliver that guidance, how the press covers that guidance, and even on how the public RECEIVES that guidance.Like you said, he does good work on a lot of other things, but whoa dang I wish he took a different tack on this

And unless the FDA is actually planning a 180° on this, I am assuming they are also pretty furious with him. But like…my fury has many rooms. And he's in the "dick move, Paul!" room rather than the, like, Meta executives room.

@Wolven I agree. The new inoculations should be available to everybody. With these restrictions, I could get the shot, but my wife could not. She has a heart condition and teaches ESL Tuesday nights, making her much more exposed that iI am.

@Wolven @steveportigal what I have heard Paul Offit say in the past is that a 3 vaccine series is sufficient to protect most people (at 90+% protection). The evidence shows that further boosters provide no long term benefit, but might (if well enough matched) provide short term benefit for up to 4 months. But, in the case of older/immunocompromised people, the boosters definitely help, so let’s prioritize them.

@gordotango @steveportigal Considering the longterm cardiopulmonary damage that even mild covid infection does to the distantly vaccinated, I think short term, recurring boosters for everyone, as long as they are verified to remain well-tolerated by longitudinal assessments, should be the norm for everybody 🤷🏿♂️
