@gray @opphunter88 @bot there's the bitch way to do it and the real way to do it. They have some scripts that you can install to "emulate" Linux along side chromeOS. Don't do that. The results are horrible. I tried it for a couple of months. I constantly got weird errors, the distro completely shit itself a few times and you have to share resources with chromeos. Doing it the firmware way with mrchomebox is FAR more stable and performant.

The parts in Chromebooks are cheap for sure so I don't think they're taking a loss on the hardware or anything. Chromebooks/ChromeOS devices ship with a boot firmware made to only specifically boot ChromeOS. However, that boot firmware is derived from coreboot, and there’s plenty of projects to just reflash a ChromeOS device with a more mainline version of coreboot with a conventional UEFI environment (or SeaBIOS, if you want IBM PC-ish legacy boot). Except to reflash the whole system firmware, you have to remove a write-protect screw hidden inside, which requires disassembly. Ironically, you have a far better chance to be running on completely free boot firmware on a ChromeOS device than you do with a conventional Intel/AMD desktop motherboard. https://mrchromebox.tech/#devices

If you have access to the base network, which isn’t that hard to achieve with a few tens of thousands of greenbacks in your pocket, you are basically god. For all the technical marvel that current cellular networks are, the protocol stack is ancient shit dating back to the 80s.
