What a nightmare. I was trying to fix a jittery touchpad by switching from libinput to synaptics (known good). Wan't getting very far so far removed the libinput package. Upon reboot the keyboard didn't work. I couldn't get past the login screen.Solution: boot a live USB and re-download the necessary .deb files, and put them in my home dir. Boot to recovery mode and install them with dpkg. I make it sound easy but i was faffing around for half an hour before i had a working solution.

@simon I'm surprised you couldn't reboot to console mode and do everything from console mode to reinstall; it *should* work without libinput. Also from a live usb you should be able to mount your root directory to install stuff.

@penguin42 recovery/console mode wouldn't bring up networking. so live usb was my saviour, as you mention.

@simon nmcli is a useful command to know for getting networking up. 'nmcli c' to list connections, 'nmcli c up devicename'
