@clive Beavers in urban areas will be a challenge. City workers will need training on how do deal with them. There is a park nearby that has beaver. They turned a trickle of water into a waterway, which protected the park during droughts. But they are industrious critters who, when their damns are in fine order, will then block ditches and culverts important to drain water during times of rain and snow melt. There was a long battle between beaver and city workers.

@CStamp Yeah, I know -- they are unpredictable creatures

@clive Not unpredictable at all. They build dams. If there are culverts and ditches, they will dam those, too. It's making city folk understand them that will be the biggest hurdle. Here, after some back and forth, they actually lugged in a backhoe to tear apart the part of the actual dam they could access. They had to make a temporary road to do so. It did keep the beaver busy for a while. Undeterred, they rebuilt, then went back to damming up the overflow pond, downstream of the dam.

@CStamp True, not unpredictable in their behavior -- dam building!Tricky for urban planners to predict all the side effects of that behavior, is more the pointI know folks who manage parks here in NYC, and the knock-on effects of any change to the ecosystems can be very hard to pre-game

@clive We started reintroducing beavers in the UK a few years ago, and so far it seems to have been a huge success. That includes London, BTW, although not central London, but the semi-rural outer areas.https://www.timeout.com/uk/news/the-uk-is-in-the-midst-of-a-full-blown-beaver-boom-081023

@clive @DKMJ Interesting idea! As the article says: there are ways to handle beaver conflicts - or rather: to prevent the conflicts ever to arise. And #beavers are so skilled at creating super #wetlands, giving space to lots of other species!
