@Strandjunker why? Everyone should pay an equal share.

@masha @Strandjunker the idea behind progressive tax systems is that everyone should "feel the same pain" from being taxed. Someone who earns $10k/year is going to feel a very different pain when taxed 20% than someone who earns $1M/yr. Progressive tax policy is about taxing everyone so that its "impact" on everyone is (roughly) the same, and a fixed rate doesn't do that.

@PaulDavisTheFirst, I would prefer to see a tax policy that at least focuses on the same contribution rather than the same pain. And it does not seem that the pain is the same. The poorer you are to begin with, the more progressive tax systems punish you for education and hard work.@masha @Strandjunker

@dump_stack @masha @Strandjunker I consider an equal contribution to be precisely equal to the same "pain". An equal absolute amount is obviously absurd, and an equal rate does not reflect the marginal value of money (ie. the last dollar of a $1M income is worth much less than the last dollar of a $10k income). I have no idea what you are referring to with your second paragraph.

@PaulDavisTheFirst, well, it's a privilege to have no idea. Some people start with nothing. So they study and work hard to get their own house, for example, and then find that every step forward comes with more government punishment for their productivity. And we can't really bring wealth into the equation either, because taxing unrealised gains is a bureaucratic and mathematical nightmare.I don't think there are any fair solutions to income and wealth taxation at all.Replacing them all with a single (progressive? why not in this case) consumption tax seems a more realistic solution rather than trying to fix the current system with crutches.@masha @Strandjunker

@dump_stack @masha @Strandjunker given that people with lower incomes spend a higher percentage on consumption, I do not consider consumption taxes fair, certainly not as a replacement for a progressive income tax.I suspected that your explanation would read something like that. I think that you're factually incorrect, and morally wrong, but I think we're going to need to just agree to disagree.

@PaulDavisTheFirst, for the first point, this is where a progressive way of calculating the consumption tax can actually work without such drawbacks as with a progressive income tax. In the case of VAT-like implementation, it would be like, say, 0% VAT on bread and a few hundred percent VAT on something like a yacht. Although VAT isn't easy to implement either, we already have it in most places, so it just needs to be adapted for the purpose. On the second point, I don't think just agreeing to disagree is the way to go if you've found some factual errors. I would happy to hear actual counter-arguments.@masha @Strandjunker

@dump_stack @PaulDavisTheFirst @Strandjunker I agree. We're paying for the same government services. Why pay more?
