Seems like still almost no Russia watchers are posting on Threads. There's some presence on Bluesky and Mastodon, but it's still mostly, nearly exclusively, all about 𝕏.

@kevinrothrockWhat is the definition of Russia watcher? Someone who actually sees how fucked Ukraine is or how evil Putin is?

@kevinrothrock Another example of something that has been confusing me more and more lately: why are so many of my acquaintances who seem most likely to be harmed by Twitter's actions the ones who are also still posting there all day? My gay and Jewish acquaintances. My acquaintances with trans kids. I don't get it (but it feels rude to ask).

@kevinrothrock I have two theories: 1. It's actually not that many, but they stick in my mind because of the surprise.2. Giving up your platform and building a new one is hard, and their lives are already harder than mine, so expecting them to make such a big sacrifice doesn't acknowledge their situation. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@kevinrothrock Oh, and theory number 3 (Sorry to unload, I've been thinking about this a lot lately!): They are discriminated against far more often than I am, so to them, what's going on at Twitter is just more of the same, and not nearly as shocking as it is to me.

@grammargirl I think the amount of hate speech on Twitter that people actually encounter is probably exaggerated, and the amount of it on other platforms is downplayed. The moderation policies might be different, but it only takes one awful incident to change how you feel forever about a space. Life is messy, and the Internet is too. Alas.

@grammargirl Unfortunately when I tell people that I switched to Mastodon, the reply I get most often is “what is that?”.

@grammargirl @kevinrothrock These theories are well reasoned. I remember being go smacked by the idea, “only the privileged can afford to quit Facebook” (back in the era when it was trendy to quit FB). Leaving social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter is a luxury not everyone can afford, often due to social or professional obligations.

@kevinrothrock @com One person I know rarely posts but asserts that she must be there professionally to read posts from the important people in her industry. That is why I don't post there. I don't want to be a reason people use for staying. I try to make sure people can get my posts lots of other places (and know that they can).

@kevinrothrock I'm not a Russia watcher (more like a Ukraine watcher), but I'm just waiting for people to start flowing into Mastodon. It's a matter of time. Elon Moskal's "X" is becoming unbearable.

@MichaelGentile @kevinrothrock They seem convinced that Mastodon is too complicated to understand for ordinary people, so I think Threads will be the hub to get them on Mastodon. We just need Meta to get around to implementing ActivityPub.

@kevinrothrock One possible explanation could be that EU citizens are still not allowed on Threads. Many Russia watchers are based in the EU.

@kevinrothrock Sure but as a community it’s not possible to move to Threads as a platform yet. I guess technically speaking Meduza can’t have a profile on Threads either as a Latvian company.

@anderspuck With American and Canadian staff members, we can certainly be on Threads. We claimed the account, but it doesn't make sense yet to invest time and energy beyond 𝕏 and IG.

@kevinrothrock I'm not sure Meta would let Medusa have an active presence on Threads. They have been very rigid about European users, and it seems like they don't want to get into legal trouble with the EU about this.

@anderspuck This is the Threads account spun from our IG account. We haven't been updating it purely because we haven't dedicated the time. The option is there.

@anderspuck IG and Threads aren't managed by companies. They are run by individual accounts assigned managerial status.

@kevinrothrock Ok. Might work, then. 🤷♂️It doesn't really change the point that this restriction limits the amount of Russia related interaction there can be on Threats. A large part of Meduza's readers cannot be there.

@anderspuck I stand corrected. We created the account, but we cannot update the feed because we do have business-account integration with an EU entity. Oh well. Sucks to be European.
