       @erlend @github I'm a bit disappointed that #Github is on fedi before #GitLab but still, it's great!

       @myoan it is indeed a tad ironic that the one actually implementing the fedi standard isn’t on the network yet!

       @erlend ActivityPub on GitLab is a community MR though. I meant that I wished opensource software were the first to communicate with opensource software 🙂 But given the number of opensource communities running Discord servers, that is not my first surprise!

       @myoan @erlend Is there an Open Source alternative to Discord or Slack? I find the 2FA support in Discord to be difficult to use. Slack has amazing search support.What I’d design is a distributed workspace where each channel can actually be hosted on a different server to distribute the load. I’d also make it so people can run backend support on home computers while the public servers proxy work to these home clients. The workspace would be a lightweight hub that supports auth and shared services like search. Is there anything like this?

       @brennansv Either #Mattermost or any #Matrix compatible server* could replace these 2 apps.I'm unsure about your other requirements though, maybe @MattermostFR and @matrix@mastodon.matrix.org could help?I and my colleagues have been satisfied by the Mattermost search on a self-hosted instance so far, but we don't have specific requirements about that. I have less experience with Matrix-compatible messaging but I'm there too.PS: Mattermost also allows to import your former Slack conversations into the app.

       @myoan @brennansv That's a fascinating design concept! Matrix being a federated system would lend itself to some of what you're thinking about. We've been very happy to see many open source communities embracing Matrix. Let us know if you have any questions!The more we can get open source communities out of walled gardens like Discord or Slack, the better. We're fans of @MattermostFR too!

       @matrix I know it is very costly to run the backends for major social media platforms, but most of us have broadband connections and a computer at home which could support a fully distributed platform. One example is image and video processing. This kind of work could be offloaded to a client which handles this processing. With 1,000 active users if just 10 people ran clients it would probably sufficient.Text could also be processed with ML models to tag the content so that topics and interests could be identified. Instead of having to search I would like the ability to browse recent posts related to a topic.This is the kind of work which Mastodon servers would struggle to handle as the user count grows. But if we can offload the heavy work it would reduce operating costs and support features that users expect.@myoan @MattermostFR
