@suorcd tell me why. I am a small business IT service provider and end having loads of old computers that I just end up throwing away.

@justinerickson declarative OS. while not new user friendly, having the main install immutable and defined by me has made many things easier. though it is not necessarily newb friendly.

@suorcd so it’s like docker or a hypervisor, at least in principle. Or not. I don’t know what I’m saying. There was a time when I got familiar with Linux and got Linux+ certified but I haven’t had a reason (or time) to dive into it again for a couple of decades. I know only enough to know I could learn a bunch again pretty easily if I had a real productive goal in mind. A destination worth the journey.

@justinerickson the words that come to mind are repeatable and self-documenting.the conf file is everything that makes up the machine from the boot to the install of Firefox.with the conf files you tell nixOs to install and remove packages, users, vpn settings.

@justinerickson once you have your conf file setup, you rebuild the system which checks for errors, assuming there are none you can switch to the new build...but if something isn't working you can reboot, choose the previous build, and the system has been reverted.it does take up storage and you can get many, many build; though there are commands for cleaning the old builds.

@suorcd interesting. Thanks for explaining that. I could see that being very useful for a lot of things and scenarios. Maybe not for me at this time of my “journey”, but perhaps down the road when I discover what I want I want to use Linux for.
