For #FossilFriday, speculative Cenozoic #tyrannosaur art at #Patreon: a species adapted for grasslands (the "stilt tyrant") and high-latitude, cold environments ("tundra tyrant"). Fluffy as it is, please don't stroke the latter. Hi-res and discussion at https://www.patreon.com/posts/children-of-re-x-88561232#dinosaurs #paleoart #paleontology #speczoo

@grb090423 It's not meant to be very big! Maybe the size of a maned wolf? I'm sure you'd be fine. They might even make good pets.

@markwitton @grb090423 Would need to be a very basal tyrannosaur then, at that size

@CFoix @grb090423 I don't think that's the case. It's not like animal body size can only increase over time.

@markwitton @grb090423 Aye, tyrannosaurs got bigger over time, though. In quite a linear way. And surely smaller theropod guilds, the paravians, monopolised smaller sized niches, and excluded the less intelligent tyrannosaurids.

@CFoix @grb090423 A body size increase over a period of evolutionary history doesn't dictate one evolutionary destiny, though. It's not a given that tyrannosaurs would only get bigger post-Mesozoic, they surely would adapt to whatever conditions the Cenozoic threw at them, becoming smaller if necessary.

@markwitton @grb090423 Well in theory. But as you know, the largest fauna is among the most susceptible to extinctions, instead of downsizing to compete with smaller bodied competitors. This although island dwarfism, proves giant land vertebrates can shrink according to resources.

@markwitton Did the stilt tyrant evolve some level of neoteny? Also, nice detail of the reptilian hip-hump on the tundra tyrant. :)

@Aiden Yes - I guess that's the case for a lot of evolution. But in this instance I was imagining that it comes from a lineage that matured early and didn't grow to enormous sizes.

@gay_ornithischians Nope, they've been lost as they kept getting cold. Mittens hadn't been invented yet, so adaptive options were limited.
