Your periodic reminder that "human-like AI" is a near-meaningless framing with deeply ableist, sexist, racist, colonialist, eugenicist roots. Stop uncritically deploying it.

@Wolven Is that supposed to be a colloquialism for "General Purpose Artificial Intelligence"?Also, I'm certain we don't adequately understand what it is to be human well enough to make anything even remotely "human-like."

@Wolven I wonder if we should start calling it "Taylorist Intelligence"To the degree that it performs like a human, humanity is mechanized and degradedA machine can be like a human in the same places that a human can be forced into being like a machine

Watch: The framing of "human-like AI" reinforces assumptions about who and which kinds of minds are "human enough" or "right enough," a line of discourse which is currently (still) having major impacts for disabled and trans and gender nonconforming individuals. It has impacts along racialized and gendered lines, and affects how people get talked about in public discourse, in the press, and in the law. Those are all very real impacts.Thinking that there is a measurable "standard" or "threshold" of "humanness" is literally the foundation of eugenics, and eugenic thought is unfortunately very much alive, to this day.In the present context, eugenics undergirds much of the mainstream public didcourse around "wild," "futuristic" ideas like "transhumanism" and "effective altruism," but also less esoteric concepts like resource deployment for pandemics and climate crises, and, again, how we go about developing "AI."The effect of our words and concepts isn't unidirectional, flowing only from cultural context to mirroring of same as linguistic expression; how we speak can influence how we think, what we believe, and how we all act, together.

And if you want to learn more about all this, I go into it at great depth, with historical and contemporary sources and citations, in my dissertation. Link's up-thread.

@Wolven I feel like this is the whole point of the AI craze - creating an impenetrable black box that Others the undesirables in a fashion special interests find acceptable. Bigots can and have and will continue to shrug in response to this being pointed out, as they think the machine, which embodies their bigoted decision making processes, lets them off the hook and gives them license to discriminate.

@Wolven love that this came up in my feed, thank you.I just watched a Sophie From Mars video essay about this exact thing, actually.more specifically: the manufacturing of "credibility" that typically accompanies the commodification of new technologies by capital, and the pascal's wager behind many investor's motivations for funding.the answer to "how do you measure the 'self' to determine whether an 'AI' has become 'self-aware'" is, as you said, inherently eugenic. the end goal is to establish whatever AI programs used for decision-making as "Kings" with the capitalist-owners being the "interpreters" and "facilitators" of the King's Word. kinda like how the "market" rules the "economy" with "market experts" holding all the weight in media and commerce-interactions

@Wolven Thoughts along said lines came to my mind when I heard of the dismissals of a Google chatbot being sentient as some of those dismissals assumed a hypothetically sentient AI could not possibly be neurodiverse.Echolalia, for example, is repetition of heard words and phrases out of context. Some neurodiverse people can at times really sound like a chatbot.Besides eugenics, there are those who just don't want the standard of 'humanness' to get in the way of commercial exploitation.
