Feinstein is a legend in my family. I was a kid, and we were living in an incredibly liberal college town. And when George Moscone was murdered, I remember my parents and their friends discussing Feinstein's gender. I don't remember the exact words, but they knew any misstep would hurt the women's movement. I can't describe it, but my dad was just so proud of her. He knew she had to step in to that moment, but he truly believed stepped up to the moment, too. He died very young. She was still mayor of SF, a city he loved. He never saw her become one of our senators, but I was able to vote for her in that first election and every election since. What has happened to her now is ridiculously sad, and I think those around her who let it get to this point are rather horrible. It shouldn't end like this. Mitch McConnell's team is proving to be just as pathetic. I hate the man, but at this point, what is happening borders on elder abuse.

@Hey_Beth Two things: people clamoring for her retirement forget that it would leave us hobbled in the judicial committee: no more confirming judges (republicans would oppose replacement). Also, Kentucky Democratic governor is prevented by legislation to name a Senator.

@Hey_Beth I'm not an expert in American politics but I wonder, why do they continue to trot him out in front of the press? He's been confused a few times now.

@mike I don't know. I just read an article in which an ER doctor gave her opinion of what is happening. She says his eyes move to the right during the spell, which indicates it is something occurring on the left side of his brain, and most likely the result of his fall earlier this year. That is very different, at least to me, than what is occuring with Feinstein. McConnell has a specific injury, and most likely, he is not going to fully recover from it. I suspect that the longer he stays in the Senate, the quicker his health will deteriorate. Feinstein's is more an overall thing in which people failed to protect her and her legacy. McConnell's family and staff should look at what happened to her and do better for him.

@Hey_Beth @mike McConnell is the one who promised to sabotage replacing Feinstein on the Judiciary Committee. Call it karma.🤷♀️

@Hey_Beth How about the parties cut a deal and retire them both?

@joyographic Seems like the GOP should be interested in that. McConnell is there until 2026. Feinstein is only there until 2024 However, Feinstein's retirement creates a problem that Kentucky may not have. We have three candidates vying for her seat: Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee. If Newsom appoints one if them, that person has an advantage going into the election.

@edgeoforever It also creates a problem in California. Adam Schiff, Katie Porter, and Barbara Lee are running for Feinstein's seat. If Newsom picks one if them, it gives that individual a distinct advantage going into the primary and general election.

@edgeoforever @mike Yep. This is a whole lot of karma hitting him upside the head.
