Okay, so when it comes to adjudicating the validity of this supposed pre-hangover drug -- to prevent hangovers -- I'm going to defer to @jetjocko, who *literally wrote the book* on this science: https://boingboing.net/2023/08/30/zbiotics-is-a-new-pre-alcohol-drink-that-claims-to-prevent-hangovers.htmlAdam, could this drug actually work?

@clive @jetjocko Is it milk? Drinking 8 ounces of milk has always been my pre party ritual after one of the worst hangovers I ever had and haven’t had as much as a head ache since.

@clive i’m not the scientist but i can report that a lot of the hangover feeling is from dehydration, potentially even causing low pressure on the brain. dehydration -> lowered CSF production. csf leaks feel a LOT like hangovers. like disturbingly.i take extra electrolyte pills and drink a lot of water when i drink. i’ve had 2 real hangovers ever bc 1. i sweated a lot & forgot to account for that, 2. drank casually with russians and ukrainians and just… really lost track

@clive it’s *possible* that acetaldehyde is a cause of hangover symptoms—nobody really knows. Acetaldehyde is so fleeting that it’s hard to get blood levels, so as far as I know no one has ever associated it cleanly with hangover….

@amy yeah I bet electrolytes are a great idea! I take them all the time when I’m doing long-distance cycling, they really help with dehydration

…and it’s *possible* that these folks have made a bacteria that makes an enzyme that breaks down acetaldehyde. But whether they have it packaged in such a way that it survives the trip through your GI tract and delivers that enzyme in quantities large enough to break down the acetaldehyde we make after drinking? Well…

…absent evidence of a strong link to hangover, and absent a good study showing the enzyme produced in a human gut, and absent a good study showing a reduction in perceived symptoms *and* objective markers like inflammatory response? I’m skeptical.

@clive @jetjocko We've had great success with hangover pretreatment. It involves determinative outcomes and predictive forecast models. Basically, we drink almost whatever and as much as we possibly can. And since none of the drinks contain alcohol, hangovers are almost 100% eliminated.
