Back in SF because I have a medical appointment in the morning, but gosh the contractors have replaced 14 out of 18 windows in 3 days and things are *so* much quieter than with the old shitty windows

@mjg59 Did you make them sing Park Life while holding the double-glazing demonstrator unit?

(I'm happy to fuck about with plumbing in the cabin myself because I want to be able to fix that in an emergency and working through it in a low-stress situation is helpful there, but there are no circumstances where I can envisage me needing to replace an entire window in my actual home, so this job involves handing piles of money to contractors instead)

@mjg59 are these triple glaze? This in my main desire to upgrade my windows.

@lyda They're not, we have to have wooden frames because we're in a historic district and that just ends up ludicrously expensive with triple glazing. And, well, SF just doesn't get cold enough to really justify that. Most of the old windows weren't even double glazed, so even that's a significant upgrade (and they're argon filled, so they're still a meaningful upgrade for the small number that were double glazed to start with)

@dysfun There is a certain twisted logic to your interpretation

@mjg59 Much to my wife's annoyance, I end up doing a lot of DIY instead of getting a contractor in, because every single time I've got a contractor in to do stuff they have failed to follow instructions and the result has been not what we asked for. In the end it's just less stressful to do it myself instead of spending lots to argue with someone who's being paid to meet our requirements and are failing to do so. :(

@mjg59 not a bad choice. I replaced the front glass in our wood heater, and cutting the sheet to size was one of the most nerve wracking things I've ever done.
