FYI: transpobia is acceptable on linuxrocks.online.I found out by getting a warning for reporting it.So this account will be going away soon.Edit to add: The volume of supportive responses has been truly startling.As somebody who's only just come out to _themself_ as trans, it's incredibly reassuring.

@1dalm Fair request.I don't have a copy of the report I submitted, but from memory I reported it as breaking the "act like an adult" rule, with the justification that transphobia is not adult behaviour.On one hand, arguably I'm stretching the definition.On the other hand, that's the closest match in the listed server rules.I then received a warning by email with the text"Please do not report posts unless they break the rules. We don't like getting reports."

@1dalm Now, it's true that there are server rules against illegal and NSFW content, and not against transphobia or hateful conduct in general.I've received a couple of reports about NSFW content, because of posts from accounts I follow that turned up on the federated timeline.That's fair, them's the rules, and I un-followed accounts accordingly.But with that context, and no response of "hey, you're right: that's bad behaviour," the import of the response is "we're OK with that here."

@gothnbass I understand the principle of letting unpleasant opinions stand (though I have seen far more aggressive, ill-informed, scheming attacks on trans people survive here and would’ve drawn the line there, not so much because I personally can’t ignore/block or talk back but to keep the place welcoming) but a warning? Geez…Personally I’m looking for an instance with a higher character limit (but also not too many rules)

@pkw @KitMuse @gothnbass The issue is originally we had a number of people reporting nazi that were just using that as an excuse to block people who disagreed with them. When after research the reality was they were just with the opposing political party and they were just name-calling. So we only block instances if the entire instance is bad. Example if its a instance dedicated to nazi we will block it. We are a Linux and Tech instance and we won't play political games.

FWIW, I don't condone that.Now that I see Michael's reply, with the lack of information about the post in question, I think I see the problem. There's a "report this user" option, but not "report this post." Given the lack of the latter, I assumed the post link/ID would be automatically included.This would help explain the couple of mystery reports for NSFW content I received, with no information about which posts were at issue. Presumably they made the same assumption.That said, would it not have been a reasonable response for a moderator to respond by asking for a link to the post in question?Two other people in this thread did that much due diligence.

@KatS @yisraeldov @gothnbass I am not going to disagree that all of this could of been handled better. You also have to remember the mods are volunteers who donate their time and energy into keeping this instance respectable. If they were to run down and hunt for the information on each report we receive it would become a full time job in doing so. The user has the responsibility of being clear on what they are reporting.We receive lots of reports for spam on other instance so there's lot...

We can not reach out to everyone individually, and really it isn't our job to decide if every post reported is potentially offensive. We expect people to engage in civil discourse.
