@parker thats awful and on par for what they do here too.during the 2017 fire i have heard testimony of someone that said they were keeping people out of or selectively IN areas while firemen went off and burned stuff, that was already on fire, to finish it off. and other horrible things.sorry to hear that. it's messed up.

iirc it was posted before the guy wondered why its $7 per bag of milk and we have to throw the surplus away. Also kinda relate that during lock downs, there was a farmer who was saying that they had a surplus of food due to no restaurants but the food prices increased.

@meowski @parker we do that sometimes in america. it depends on the market. the government has a giant cave complex absolutely stuffed with cheese they made from milk they bought from under farmers who went over quota. it used to go out to welfare recipients (government cheese) but that doesn't happen anymore due to the EBT system. so i think they hold it to sell for cheap when the market goes screwy and other than that send it to public schools and prisons

@mischievoustomato @modpod @parker during Covid and the lockdowns, in many places, including the US, farmers throw away copious ammounts of vegetables and dairy products, because it was all stocked up with nowhere to go, because people were buying less, so the markets were stocked. There were also no trucks available to carry that shit around. Whenever someone asks "why are farmers throwing stuff away instead of giving it", the answer is "logistics". Logistics are expensive, the farmer already lost a lot of money in the farming and stocking of wasted produce, they won't spend any more money distributing it, it's way cheaper for them to cut their losses by throwing it away.Maybe the situation in the video is somewhat related (and the quotas were created, again, due to logistics problems).

@Suzu @modpod @mischievoustomato Canada has had protectionist policies regarding dairy for a long time. And I assume if a dairy had a great month regarding production, it's hard to suddenly ramp down production, then ramp it back up the next month to meet quota, given cows aren't all that flexible.

@Suzu @mischievoustomato @modpod Even when I was a kid, there was the Canadian Wheat Board to contend with out here, which set grain prices and it was illegal for any farmer to sell their product outside the wheat board. A source of Western alienation out here for a long time, though its monopoly was finally remove a decade ago.

@modpod @parker and the thing is, the high prices don't really help the farmers at all. it's the middlemen that make bank. a dairy farmer only gets about 40% of what it's sold at IF they're lucky.

@parker @modpod @mischievoustomato it's funny because I remember here farmers trying to make an "union" to impose quotas and regulate the price of some goods, and the government ended it before it even started. Then there were some farmers who threw away thousands of liters of milk in "protest" to the decline in price due to overproduction, and they were fined. This was almost 20 years ago (and the situation kinda changed since then, with farmers buying a lot of political power and getting away with some bullshit nowadays).What you're telling me is that in Canada the government is already doing the shitry job of price-fixing stuff for the farmers, is that it?

@parker @modpod @mischievoustomato @Suzu Even after that there were price fixing schemes that a lot of the mass-produced bread product companies got caught doing and nothing came of that. Prices slightly went down when they got caught but no punishments as far as I know.

@Suzu @modpod @mischievoustomato Yeah they've had quotas and price controls for everything for a long time now. Quotas for poultry and eggs too. Been around longer than I have. Though in more recent years beef farmers out here have set up their own supply chains, made their own butchers, stores, and sold directly in town.
