Stupid question - so cheap slow kamikaze drones are a big thing now. Why can't you, like, mount a rifle and use an iphone to just track and blast them?

@ZachWeinersmith have you ever shot a rifle at a moving target from a mile away?Anti-aircraft cannons are a bit more sophisticated and projectiles explode in the vicinity of a target instead of hitting it.

@ZachWeinersmith I think "slow" is relative. Tracking and deconfliction seem to be the hard part in swarm attacks. Here's a gaming sim that may be illustrative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc0WZOKKLoY

@ZachWeinersmith drons like Shahed small, their vulnerable parts even smaller, they fly not so low and not so slow. i think ppl actually shut them down sometime, but it require skill and significant luck. There is some Israels system that basically camera and robohand to hold rifle (*terminator theme playing*). I heard it's more or less effective, but not sure was it tested against drones or only copters. It long run direct energy weapon (like that Raytheon laser thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfPcl6nAlM4) looks more reasonable, but not today i afraid

@roboneko @ZachWeinersmith aeroplanes change direction quite easily too.Anyhow, I was referring to radio proximity fuses (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?arnumber=6443717). You just have a lot better chances to hit a relatively small moving target from far away with a shrapnel than to land a direct hit with any kind of unguided projectile.

@roboneko @ZachWeinersmith >was just pointing out that it is in fact possible to use regular old bullets as was often done historicallyIf you have unlimited supply, that is. In WW2 before proximity fuses became a thing, ammo spent was on the order of 2000 per downed aircraft. And that's the lower estimate.
