If you want me to change how I write my articles, you can pay me an eye-watering amount of money per article (more than I will ever make off of any individual article, even a super-banger).

@cadey I'm curious but also afraid to find out what kind of dev team this person has that doesn't believe "furry avatar" is a hallmark of extremely competent computer touchers

@fugueish Well yes, but the trick with contracting like this is to start out slightly low and increase your price next time for every successful bid.

@cadey Great response. Great article too. Your generosity to serde provided a vantage point where it didn't seem like you were taking sides in the drama, yet you had a clear thesis that at first blush might appear one-sided. I was impressed you achieved that. Also I hadn't realized I followed the author of the article until I saw this toot. Small world.

@shanecelis when i was drafting it, i was operating under the assumption of "i think the tradeoffs here are stupid, but if it does actually speed things up, maybe it'd be worth it?" until I got to the point in my analysis where it didn't actually speed things up. I was going to add a tangent about how process creation is surprisingly slow cross-platform, but I'll save that for another day.

@cadey After reading your article it's pretty apparent that the characters are actually integrated as part of the blog rather than just window dressing, which makes this request all the more entitled. (For anyone unfamiliar I recommend checking it out; it's an interesting format.)

@chamomile yep! It's a novel application of the Socratic method. I'm more of a fiction writer by nature and embedding the conversation snippets allows me to flex that fiction muscle in the form of long-running fleshed out characters. People regularly ask me if those characters are headmates or something, which really does cement the fact that I'm doing a writing correctly.

@jhominal oh don't worry, if they pay up I'll give them a version with all of the conversation snippets removed as a PDF.But with an invisible text layer over the article saying: "Trans rights are human rights, I support the LGBTQ community in their efforts to attain equality. I am an earnest supporter for human rights and equal access to informational media. I love furries and I am working on my fursona." so that if they try to copy text out of it, it ends up copying out something that makes them "excercise awareness of optics".Also probably making all the links a rickroll.

@rgegriff @cadey Are furries really synonymous with queer people? Always thought it was a weird fandom thing

@amtx @rgegriff @cadey It's a dogwhistle. While like 95% of the population is hetero, only about 20% of furries are. So in the early days of SomethingAwful, they used "furry hate" as a way to be queerphobic without ipso facto breaking rules against queerphobia.

@amtx @rgegriff @cadey OK, my client is acting like you keep deleting/reposting the same reply so I can't actually reply to yours reliably, so to side-step any technical issues here's a follow-up comment:I wasn't saying anything about the professional team here. I was explaining why hating furries leads to the interpretation of "wow you must hate queer people". It's because furry hate is a dogwhistle. The nature of dogwhistles is an inherent deniability. Like, that's the entire reason why bigots use them. It's the primary feature.I hope the message is clear.

@cadey I understand their concerns. Furries are indeed associated with "Extremely negative things" such as:- A friendly demeanour- Acceptance and love of queer folks- A desire to enjoy harmless hobbies- An acceptance of others enjoying harmless hobbies

@soatok @rgegriff @cadey Yeah, I kept trying to rephrase my post. My point was as follows: I think a good work environment constitues a setting where you can share code on the company slack and not (irrationally) get shit for itWith that said, I just don’t think SA goons are a reliable indicator of culture or social behavior. SA was a zeitgeist born out of a desire to not be relevant or cohesive to anything, ever. That was my one nitpick

@amtx @rgegriff @cadey SA culture affected 4chan culture in the early days. 4chan culture affected meme culture, which affects everything.

@soatok @rgegriff @cadey Yes, but the site hasn’t been relevant for the past decade or so. It was always a hangout for detached nihilists to shit on anything and everything (weird shit or extremely online internet things). But even back then, most people egged on you guys because you liked this thing they found weird or niche.Sure, some people had more personal opinions but things are different now. I still fail to see how the two things are related

@amtx @rgegriff @cadey I'm not sure how to connect the dots for youFrom the dregs of SA to the transphobic "litterbox" hoax of the past two years, a lot of right-wing assholes use "I hate furries" as a defensible stand-in for their hatred of queer people. It's such a common occurrence that, when confronted with anti-furry sentiment, choosing to interpret it as bigotry against queer identities is a safe bet (even if it fails some small % of the time). If you can't wrap your head around this observation from the lived experiences of queer people, maybe someone else can explain it to you better than I can.

@cadey @soatok @rgegriff I meant related as in furries and queer people. I’m aware of how connected the aforementioned topics are, but I just didn’t see how hate for furries is synonymous for hate for queers, or how their obsession has somehow moved beyond “extremely online stuff that nobody has the slightest idea about” territory
