Lemme explain this image and what's really going on here. It's genuine in the sense that the item exists and the only digital manipulation is the addition of "www.engrish.com" as an online watermark. The Chinese is "毛主席是我们心中的红太阳", which is an old CCP slogan saying "Chairman Mao is the red sun in our hearts".So the humour arises from "sun" being mistranslated as "fucker". And here's where it gets interesting.

It's a big stretch, but the symbol for "sun" might be taken to mean "fucker" in the sense that sun is seen as good and positive. Cheap Chinese-to-English translators tend to often utilise a version of "fuck" to denote such emotions. It could also be a subversive use of such translation errors to get across an anti-CCP message. But it's neither.Look again at the photograph. It's of a piece of tourist tat in a modern shop, not an old information sign. (Most of those disappeared when the problem was addressed in the lead-up to the Beijing Olympics.)

This item uses a genuine old slogan, probably from a propaganda poster. The English has been added to sell it to you, the "jaded, worldy-wise Westerner".No small businessman is going to jail for calling Mao a "red fucker". The item is aimed solely at YOU.It has been deliberately produced to play off YOUR prejudices. It is in English, FFS. There's even that whole "Engrish" site where you can go and find examples like this. The thing is, you buy it. Literally as well as figuratively. While you think you're laughing at how "incompetent" modern China is, whoever made these items is laughing at you. And they have your money too, honey - I think that's called having the last laugh.

Why I've brought this up is because this is exactly how you manipulate media for profit. You look for your target's weakness - in this case, overweening cultural arrogance - and you lean into it.Think about this when you laugh at the online "talking points" that seem to show how stupid your opponents are. It's generally you who is the mark.Like with the Mao sign, though, it's unlikely that it's a 5D chess move organised by your enemies. It's smart use of psychology by someone out to make some money.FFS, try to remember this. Your unacknowledged prejudices are very profitable.

For every smart "lefty" manipulating Trump's mugshot there's an arsehole buying a T-shirt with the original pic and another arsehole buying one with the modified version.

I'm not trying to knock people modifying the mugshot. I'm very much here for the funny takes. What I am trying to say is that it's another example of how to manipulate people. I started to watch closely several hours before the mugshot was taken. This pic, taken by Ben Gray of AP, is of Trump supporters outside the sheriff's office, awaiting Trump's arrival. One is wearing a T-shirt proclaiming Trump's innocence with a digitally manipulated image. In it, he is already wearing an orange jumpsuit.Try not to jump to the same fuck-stupid conclusions as with the Mao pasteboard.
