I got prompted to tip at a self-order kiosk at a carryout place. No way, no how.I tip well when, you know, it actually involves service. Damned if I’m gonna tip a robot.

@tek same. It drives me mad when a counter serve place's kiosk defaults to like a 20% tip. What heck for? You handed me something and that was the end of the service. If you want more than I already paid then raise your prices.

@tek I read a few months back that Kroger tried adding a tip feature to its self-checkout registers in a few stores. Seriously? You want me to leave a tip when *I’m* the one doing the checking, bagging and ferrying the groceries to my car? Hell no.

@tek I mean...you're not tipping the robot, you're tipping the people in the kitchen, the same way that your tip to a waiter sometimes gets shared with the people in the back as well

@mxp Yeah, but nah. I don’t tip at McDonald’s. If I have to place my own order at a kiosk with carry out, there’s no way on earth I’m tipping anyone. There was no service over and above what I’d get at, say, Target.

@tek @technocounselor People still have to make those orders, cook them or at least bag them so you can have the privilege of not having to talk to someone and feel all magical and special. There's still humans making the magic work. Most likely Even if you can't see them.

@jane_jordan @technocounselor True, and those people get better wages than the ones depending on their tips as part of their income. I say that as someone who worked in a kitchen, waited, and delivered.

@jane_jordan @tek That’s a good point. As long as those tips actually go to the people who are doing the hard work, I’m fine with it.

@technocounselor @tek I looked back at my post. I want to apologize if I came across as short=tempered, or some other word I can't quite describe. I just felt like I could have worded what I was trying to say better. That said, I wish we didn't have to tip. I wish eveyrone, regardless of their job, got a decent paycheck. As part of my work, I see how little people get paid and how much they rely on tips, ad it is a no-win for them. They make too little and struggle, or they make too much, which sucks.

@jane_jordan @technocounselor It’s OK to have strong feelings! No offense taken, and FWIW I agree with you.But in my opinion, companies are using this to avoid giving their employees raises, while keeping their prices artificially low to look cheaper than their competitors. No way. I’m not supporting that. A car oil change place asked me for a tip last week. WTF, no. Give your people raises and don’t turn them into beggars.
