Anybody confused why people still listen to turntables or CD players forget that they never:- stop working because they can't connect to WiFi- stop working because they need a firmware update- stop working because the manufacturer dropped support- say "if you like Bach you might like Taylor Swift"- play ads- recommend "turntable premium"

@joat - stop working if you drop streaming plans- stop working if the streaming service goes out of business- stop working if the streaming service decides they don't want to pay royalties to the artist- stop working if the streaming service takes it out of the catalog that monthbuying vinyl, CDs, and paper books means you own the material. it's not a unilaterally revokable, highly limited and one-sided right to use license.copyright law and "fair use" are a complete mess these days.

@paul_ipv6 @joat this is why my current approach to music is:look on Bandcamp firstif it’s not on Bandcamp, look for a CD and rip it.this way, I can use my music collection however I want, without having to get around DRM.

@joat Not to forget that you- won't lose your collection because your account was closed- see parts of your collection disappear as they have been dropped from the catalogue of the provider or received some take-down notice- can no longer play them because you need to upgrade your account first- won't get nagged to accept the new ToS

@joat it's also true for playing MP3/FLAC files locally, to some extent. (sure computer may die off, but there are backups..)Remember how it used to be a norm 15y ago? before copaganda from music industry and the governments serving them, and the mirage of "easy" streaming made things go somehow backwards?

@Mac_CZ @f00fc7c8 @paul_ipv6 I'd forgotten about Bandcamp until recently. It's cool but there's not much classical and what there is is difficult to find. I probably need to learn how to search it more effectively.
