#emacs Very rude awakening using #orgroam out of the blue, tones of "Invalid ref" errors and end of file error during parsing 🙄 and the database won't finish synching anymore, causing Emacs (28.2 and 29.1) to choke. I will move off org-roam eventually, I guess, but the timing of this mess is just very unfortunate.

@jameshowell I've spent so much time trying to figure out what's causing this, it's tragic... it used to be an org-ref dependency that was causing this error before, so I'm surprised it's back... worse is end of file while parsing...

@oatmeal @jameshowell Hmm... I remember encountering an issue like this recently. I'm not at my computer right now, but I think it had something to do with LaTeX snippets. Do you use those?

@oatmeal why do you want to leave roam? I get increasingly happy with it for organizing work related projects and agenda

@boo_ no I don’t have any latex snippets anywhere afaik.

@Xuxxux the en dependency is just an accident waiting to happen, like in this case, and it’s very difficult to debug unless you’re familiar with roam’s internals. I’ve been using it since forever but I think file only approach might be preferable… my do is quite large I guess and it’s lots of big text files….

@oatmeal @Xuxxux I suppose that clearing and re-syncing the db wasn't the fix? I am still on Emacs 28.1, I really hope to not have a bunch of issues when I try to jump to 29.

@nickanderson @Xuxxux the errors stated showing while I was on 28.2 but I didn’t try to re-sync the db. It happens on either 28.2 or 29.1 after deleting the db and trying to sync again.

@nickanderson even worse … leaving it to finish synching freezes the desktop eventually… couldn’t even ssh into my computer.

@nickanderson @oatmeal @Xuxxux I have moved from 28 to 29 without a hitch recently. But my org-roam db is still quite small.

@schuemaa I’ve tried dividing the directory assuming it’s chocking on the number of nodes but the problems are processing the ref ids. With couple of files it claims end of files reached while parsing, which indicates something is wrong with the org function it uses to read the meat data I assume.

@oatmeal have you made a minimal example with no references and checked if that works?

@oatmeal I moved from #orgroam to #denote about a year ago. It’s probably not as efficient, but it’s clearly less brittle

@schuemaa some files do go through just not all. I did setup a minimal config with only roam, which didn’t work. Also checkout the last commit from eMacs-straight/org-mode… it’s now hanging at about 20% of files processed

I think I may have found the problem... it seems to happen on files which have file local props setup in the prop line (1st line of the file). When I add them to the local file list (at the end) org-roam doesn't complain and processes the file.

@oatmeal were you able to resolve your woes? I'd rather not that happens to me 2 years down the line with no solution.

@schuemaa Hi Roger. Yes. I've posted above. The problem is the org parser choking on files with file local variables in the prop line (the first line in the file). I had to move all the variables I have in some files (needed by other tools) to the variable list (at the end of the file).Problem seem to be both the org parser and org-roam not stopping/skipping files that can't be processed. Clearly when the sync doesn't finish, you can't really use roam.I'll open an issue later on org-roam's repo.

@schuemaa as for the couple of end of file parsing, it seem to be related to missing closing quotes around the name of variables, but that was in only two files.
