@textfiles I hope you're right and IA isn't being taken for a ride, but it's funded by (among others) DeepMind, Google, Microsoft, and Meta so yeah pretty hard to believe this isn't just a front group for industry to pretend they're taking ethics seriously...

@textfiles I'm glad to see more organizations (especially ones I admire as much as the Internet Archive) take a much more cautious perspective on AI. I'd just as soon live without AI but if we have to have that stuff, I would much rather people take a more cautious and careful perspective on it. It terrifies me how people just dive headlong into this stuff without even considering the issues that AI can cause.

@textfiles That website feels like it's crammed full of hollow phrases, bordering on PR style.I couldn't find anything so far even hinting at the fact that (generative) AI (ChatGPT, MidJourney ...) as it is has massive negative social impacts, is being trained on scraped data without regard for licenses or ownership (that alone should be a huge red flag for @internetarchive ) and uses absurd amounts of energy - to name some of the most prominent issues. Not sold on thisCC @tante

@textfiles I appreciate the gesture and the effort of Internet Archive to help steer AI developers in the ethical path, but reading the buzzword filled site I just got the feeling that it's "regulatory compliance" and almost everything you contribute to the discussion will be ultimately disregarded in favor of profits and they will claim to have listened to "the expert community" who "oversees our ethical commitments".

@textfiles The current "AI" is just some really fancy plagiarism. Not to mention the models are being created using data from such trusted sources as Reddit. It all just needs to go away until it's more than just a high tech parlor trick.
