I have a houseguest who won’t let her kids watch tv which apparently means I also can’t watch tv 🫠They are not invited back.

@vees listen here buddy, you’re trying to use logic & that’s not allowed.I had a very PG rated sitcom on when they got here & was asked to turn it off. Then if I try to watch anything they either say it’s not TV time or put on Bluey. It’s kind of bonkers. I feel like I’m a pretty modern parent. But I don’t know if the kids tell me what to do of if I tell them what to do 🙃

@vees I feel like I’m living in a daycare where the kids are in charge. It’s kinda chaotic because I don’t understand the rules. Sometimes running around the house isn’t ok. But if I say stop running because their mom has been telling them to stop I’m told it’s fine.If I actually do have a rule or boundary I’m told I’m “freaking out”. So like I guess we unilaterally respect the boundaries of kids (which is fine) but grown up boundaries are “freaking out”?

@nikikole None of it makes sense. Boundaries are one thing (kid should be able to say without worry that they're uncomfortable with something) but eventually you have to graduate the kids to "yes you know these bad words and these rude concepts and now you need to know there is a time and a place for them." Easier when they've been allowed to soak up normal things in their environment.

@vees I was reprimanded for having a fun “secret” — I think I gave them a skittle or something & was like “shhh don’t let everyone know I have skittles”

@vees or like yeah, I try to watch my language. But sometimes I say something is “dumb”. Which isn’t allowed. “Crap” is allowed, but “fart” isn’t.

@nikikole If "fart" wasn't a word allowed in my house, my son's brain would explode out of his ears. We watch this weird Netflix show where aliens try to explain stuff on earth and the fart jokes are part of our bonding.

@nikikole Also, doesn't Bluey have a whole episode where the dad farts in the kid's face and they have a mock trial about it?

@vees I wish I understood the concept here. It’s also just not consistent. Because if it’s rude words, crap seems worse than fart? Is shit ok?

@vees I have no idea how they even approach this. Because things like fart come up in children’s media (I would think crap wouldn’t). Lots log kids books talk about farts.

@vees the parents are now chilling on their phones while the TV is off & the kids (who clearly need down time & are very tired) are expected to *quietly* entertain themselves. Please let these children watch tv.

@vees @nikikole It is an excellent episode. Many great slang names for farts in it.
