Just had one of those horrifying I'm-old-now thoughts... I sometimes use Data from Star Trek as an analogy when talking about AI (like emphasizing that LLMs really aren't Data, even if they occasionally do a good impression of him)... except I just realized Star Trek: The Next Generation aired before a lot of the people I talk to about this stuff were even born!

@simon Oof, this just made me realize that it started airing like two months before I was born, but it very much feels like part of my childhood, and now I feel old as hell too.

Now I need to find a new friendly, ethical, generally intelligent AI analogy that people under 30 will have been exposed toI guess it's probably Jarvis.

@simon yeah that would work. I tried to explain something with an analogy to photographic plates recently .. that didn't go well.

@simon What signs do we have that Data wasn't just a sophisticated LLM?I wasn't convinced of the arguments made in The Measure of Man that Data was sentient. Picard argued that Data was intelligent and self-aware, but LLMs do well on IQ tests and often speak as if self aware ("As a large language model, I...")

@simon This is the terrible part of teaching. A movie comes out that perfectly explains your topic and then Boom! just five measly years later, none of the kids have seen it because they were all 13 when it came out.

@simon I was thinking about this yesterday. Data is a one-off plot device/character. The actual state of reproducable AI is represented by the ship's computer, which is mindlesly helpful but sometimes obtuse. Star Trek gets it right once again.

@simon maybe try Isaac, the Kaylon from the Orville, that show that’s more Star Trek than Star Trek and should be relevant for a few more years. (I had to google Jarvis… and I generally like Star Trek, but from the 90s on my access to spin offs was limited)

@simon This is a bit beside the point now 🙂 but I had this thought some time ago that perhaps LLMs are in fact a great endpoint for storing information that would otherwise lay around as huge datasets. Wrote a bit about it here: https://livingsystems.substack.com/p/the-future-of-data-less-data

@simon Wall-e? R2D2? I would not describe Jarvis as friendly, I remember it as quite pedantic.

@simon if you want to feel really old: it's already been 15 years since Iron Man itself came out. (The first film in the modern series, at least—it was released in 2008.)It's conceivable that in just a few years (let's say 3, maybe sooner), there'll be instances where you find yourself talking about this stuff to people who weren't even born then.
