So @mondoweiss is running their own #mastodon server. Obviously, they also have their own news website. I am not sure what software they use for that site, but shouldn't there be server software that does both? Wouldn't that help get all the journalists here? #journalism

@wjmaggos @mondoweiss I honestly don't think that's the issue #journalists have but I guess it wouldn't hurt.I think there are types of instance that could easily be modified, such as rant.li. It's quite newsy already and ready to go.#media #news #rantli #journalism

@marqle @mondoweiss I wonder if there's anything like a standard software package for journalism sites.

@wjmaggos @mondoweiss Well #ActivityPub is #opensource so they could easily write something, but i think the problem lies in the law not the html.Di you see the story where ft.com tried out a server and then their legal team panicked and they dropped it?The laws in most countries have no equivalent of #safeharbour to protect people on these servers. It's no accident it's only #American #journos who are here.

@marqle @mondoweiss but if I recall correctly, ft opened it up to the general public. their sites should only be for journalists that work for them imo. we've seen some of this happening but they don't seem to be getting their journalists to use it (at least with their own names).https://mastodon.tucsonsentinel.com is one exception.

@wjmaggos @mondoweiss Oh I see what you're saying. they open closed servers that we can pull from but they pull nothing back so we can't comment?I guess that would protect them.

@marqle @mondoweiss I don't. if they only give accounts to staff, wouldn't the replies be treated just like comments on articles, something I assume many have had for years (or years ago). or maybe that's only a US thing.

@wjmaggos @mondoweiss I think- under #UK #aw - they'd have to have it so no one else's posts could be pulled into their server.I think any incoming posts would make them liable as publishers. This in turn - I think - means they couldn't fulfil the articles of #mastodon #federation,I really need someone better versed in #uklaw to help me here?#fediverse #media #legal

@wjmaggos @mondoweiss Good exception there. I think the #BBC do have some special protections - but they certainly have a very large legal team :)

@wjmaggos @mondoweiss There is no requirement for the publishing system to be integrated into the server.Basic publishing tools such as WordPress have Mastodon integration available as a plugin.Suspect large news publishers have their own bespoke authoring and publishing systems for security if nothing else. They wouldn't want anyone breaking in using a vulnerability in an off-the-shelf system. However, I would be looking for them to engage not just dump a few words and a link to a piece.

@leighms @mondoweiss all true but I wonder what cool stuff we could do better via integration that might help and simplify things for them, and making joining us more of a killer app experience, than just another social media site.

@wjmaggos Our site runs on WordPress. There is a plug-in that will integrate with ActivityPub, but we’re waiting to see what develops. The plug-in author was recently hired by Automattic to work on ActivityPub + WordPress. There is also a design proposal called OpenPress from a well known WordPress developer. We’re watching that to see if it develops legs.https://openpress.social/

@wjmaggos @marqle @mondoweiss yes, I'm pretty sure that's current policy by the BBC, at the current stage of their "experiment". They haven't given any indication they will have a news feed there, let alone individual journalist accounts.
