"Clipping In, Clipping Out", or ...... how to make a decision when expert advice is all over the placeIt's my little essay on deciding whether to use clip-in cycling shoes when I crossed the country this spring: https://clivethompson.medium.com/clipping-in-clipping-out-ccf852203dddA "friend" link if you're not Medium subscriber: https://clivethompson.medium.com/clipping-in-clipping-out-ccf852203ddd

@clive The "friend" link isn't working for me, it still requires a paid account. So on the basis of not knowing what your decision was... I hated the idea of clipping into pedals until I started using them, then, as long as they were properly adjusted to release easily when needed, I haven't looked back. *mountain biking, not long distance.

@andyh2o Oops, fixed! Try that link now -- thank you for pointing it outYep, nearly all mountain bikers I know use 'em!

@clive That's quite a journey to undertake, must have been great! Interesting that you went through various phases, and that you ended up with a hybrid approach in particular, I've not heard of that being a thing but if it's comfortable and works then why not.

@clive I enjoyed the read. Thanks for the friend link. I‘m a big clipped-in fan, but have plenty of friends/people I know who ride flats all day. The idea of a „right answer“ for everyone…foolish :)

@clive Fun piece!I love riding clipped in, until I switch and then I love riding without ‘em. I love riding Bike A until I switch and then I love riding Bike B. I’ve come to realize that I love a “fresh feeling”. I think it’s the way it brings fresh attention to the experience of riding. So I just constantly switch things up.

@clive I just had to replace the pedals on my hybrid (that I use for around the town and the gravel trail through the parks). To my friend's dismay, I put big mountain bike flat pedals instead of clip-ins.After reading your piece, maybe I'll consider it for one day in the future.

@clive it took me years of MTBing to finally buy clipless pedals, and when I did I only used them on a hybrid, on the road. Had more than one tumble at the start, including an embarrassing broken scaphoid in the middle of a Greek forest when falling into a puddle.Happily SPD-SL'd up now - another rite of passage and a fearsome upgrade with the right shoes.

@clive enjoyed reading your piece. I LOL’d at the “low-key simmering with pure loathing at the mere presence of a cyclist in their midst…” I’ve definitely felt that - and ride very defensively. I’m still using toe clips and I’m not convinced I’m leaving them because of exactly what you found. With this ancient clip setup I can vary my foot position more than a clip/cleat (I think). Also I really want to avoid the cleat walking clickyness 😖

@dxzdb Yeah, another friend of mine today was telling me about his old school toe clips, and suggested I give them a try – I think I will!

@clive Few things to watch out for:- That pedaling without clipping in? Yeah - the clip can smash into the ground, curb or whatever and break. Pointing your toe might prevent this.- Getting a shoe that allows you to just put your foot in, isn't always easy. Right now I'm reaching down every time I get in the clips. - The act of getting into the clips may be harder than real clips, I need to try them someday - if there's a non-clicky shoe-switching to these might mess up muscle memory.

@clive I can't read the article because I haven't paid Medium anything and haven't even considered it until now. Love the topic and have had lots of debate about this, some with unexpected anger from a long term cyclist who didn't agree with my take that riding with normal pedals and normal shoes was actually just find and no research I found proved to me that the clips (or clipless clips) made any difference. I have fallen with clips in and hurt myself because of the clips.

@resing Heya! Second link I posted shows the piece in full without needing a subscription -- let me know if for some reason it doesn't work for youAs for that unexpected from that long term cyclists: Yeah, I got all sorts of snippy unsolicited advice from folks who thought I was Doing It Wrong, lolTowards the end of the ride I had cyclist try to tell me "you need to change [some aspect of my technique] or you won't get far"I was at mile 4,100 or so in my ride 😂
