Most of the companies he works with were started before he threw money at it with an exception of SpaceX.Blocks and Mutes are absolutely essential to a safe and easy browsing experience. @stux Not having the ability to block people on #Twitter will result in more arguments, insults, threats, etc. Engagement is what drives the platform and brings in the revenue, which is exactly what Elon Musk wants. @stux the Apple store also requires apps names to be at least 2 characters long. And yet... 😔Most likely scenario: they rename mute to block, so that you can't see the people you ""block"" in your timeline, but they still can see your posts and comment on your them even if you can't see their replies. Effectively making bullying and hate spread unstoppable.

@stux I read it the same way initially, but I think this refers to the ability for the app operators to block people, not the users. Essentially, Apple mandates that Elon and his merry indentured servants be able to block users. The option for users to block other users doesn't appear to be required.

@stuxI don't think this would be a problem.It doesn't say that the ability to block users has to be available for the end users.I'm old enough to remember when the app store didn't allow apps with only one character in the name… until Twitter was rebranded as X.Also, they can rename mute → block and everything would probably be ok.

@stux Over the last year, I found YouTube advertisements more and more intrusive, and my enjoyment of even non-monetized creators was suffering.In spite of knowing damn well that it was extortion, I ponied up for a Premium membership, and it's startling how much better the platform feels to me.I'm not in favor of extortion and other forms of enshittification, but I can see how Elon might think that having a pay-to-block feature would generate a chunk of revenue.

@stux Don't worry Stux! Apple will find a way to keep blocking a random Mastodon or Matrix client from their App Store every six months for showing (any) user generated content, despite having mod tools. And they'll keep bending the rules for Twitter, and we won't know why. (Recall Apple was fine pissing off Netflix and Amazon for many years with no in-app sign ups for "reader" apps. So it really seems they're uniquely friendly toward this one platform.)
