It is insane how much better engagement is on Mastodon than on Twitter. On here, I've gained over 100 followers from a single post a few times already. On Twitter, my most popular tweet ever got 2 million impressions. And the analytics claim that earned me...... a whopping 2 new followers.

@lowqualityfacts As I understand it both Twitter & Facebook juice their engagement numbers HEAVILY. Key diff (as it's been explained to me) is that Twitter gives (gave?) people info they could use to figure out it's bullshit, while Facebook actively hides that from you. (Josh Marshal from Talking Points Memo has been particularly vocal about that w.r.t. video.) I.e. not that twitter's better as such, just that they bullshit more by omission than outright lies.

@lowqualityfacts I really don't intend to trivialize your achievements, but I think that might be due to the fact that there are less users on Mastodon and overall less meme/funny accounts, which results in people following whatever funny account they can find. People on Twitter have all the options and are therefore a lot more picky and deliberate when choosing whom to follow, or at least that's my perception...

@lowqualityfacts after my account was deleted in early 2021 for a joke⌠i made a new account. This twitter account was used from early 2021 to mid-December of 2022.At the time of deletion i had about 186 followers.Since then i have made over 190 followers on mastodon, had better conversations, and a better, less negative/toxic experience.Twitter is almost nothing but clapbacks and snappy criticisms. Its culture is nothing i miss, personally.

@lowqualityfacts Iâm running a sale on one of my RPGs. My gross from Mastodon has been somewhere north of $1k. From Twitter, itâs somewhere around $0. It told me people were seeing it, but I guess people on Twitter donât like fun. Thatâs the only reasonable explanation.

Nobody cares about your posts, if you don't have 1M followers or more.But that's not because they really care about your content, it's because they want to leech from your followers to gain more attention.Things work differently here. Having 1k followers here means nothing. Specially since 75% of that 1k followers are dead accounts or bots. So people focus more on following people and content they really like.

@lowqualityfacts yeah it was really weird. I had an account on the post-Elon-Twitter. First post: Got a decent amount of engagement, like thousands of views and a few likes. I got like a follower or two. Then the rest of the posts that I made didn't even crack 100. They were of the same type of posts too. With hashtags and everything. I never really had a twitter, never got into it and that's most of the reason why. Felt like there was nothing to really engage with.

My most viral tweets never netted me followers; what did net me followers was a specific kind of RTing and quote-tweeting, like "Alon is looking for a job, hire him [sic - it was years before I came out enby]" or "this report in the NYT is sourced to what Alon blogged first" or such, from people with followers with the same specific interest as what I write about.

@lowqualityfacts <rant>I'm sure there are commercial reasons, but it's irritating when anyone worries about numbers of followers, analytics, etc. Social media is a place to interact & discuss; to vent & rant as an antidote to insanity. Why does it have to be exploited for commerce? I will admit to appreciating discovery of art/music here, and I love that it keeps me abreast of current events, but Twitter was a constant barrage of thinly disguised commercialism that ruined that platform for me
