Lots of skilled martial artists have zero idea how to teach self defense or even give actively harmful advice. Look for: Simple and intuitive techniques that are easy to learn, honest discussion about the effects of adrenaline, recognition that there are no one size fits all answers. Unless you want to devote serious time to martial arts, avoid complex techniques that require muscle memory, overly prescriptive "if A then B" responses to scenarios, classes that focus too much on fighting

@efjbgc My 15 years of martial arts experience agrees. However, my current and past, is martial arts, not self defense. You are correct they are not the same thing. "Self defense" components are often mentioned, such as situational awareness, strategies of avoidance, tactical simplicity, but mainly kung Fu, tai chi, chin-na, etc are hand to hand fighting techniques, and the self disciplines that go along with them. But it is true that with sufficient training yeah, it is good self defense training. But sufficient means years of persistence.

@tomjennings @efjbgc What about when a cop is learning self-defense at the same dojo?

@tomjennings @efjbgc I love how every time Elm Fork dishes out advice an expert or someone experienced in that field comes out and goes “Yeah. You’re right.”Talk about legitimacy

@OwenWight @efjbgc Wait -- my supportive post is bad somehow? If you're trying to imply something it's better to state it outright. I don't always catch subtle hints.

@tomjennings @efjbgc no it’s not bad at all! I think it’s impressive how Elm Fork never misses with their advice!

@tomjennings @OwenWight Yeah it's definitely always nice to be validated by people who know what they're talking about :)
