       I use Mastodon for public scholarship, because that is one of the main benefits I see to public/open social media. It's how I used Twitter and I've definitely benefited from other people using social media this way.But in my experience, Mastodon is 'splainy AF, which is exhausting. Just this morning, a gentleman decided I would benefit from an explanation of GIGO, FFS.So, while I never insist on titles, I'm going to include mine in my display name for a while, to see if that helps.

       @emilymbender A large portion of people I interact with on the Internet are conservatives, who believe that they are more expert in science than the vast majority of scientists, more expert in medicine than the vast majority of doctors, etc.Honestly, on social media, I do not do a good job of keeping track of who is who and who does what, but I am very much guilty of what you complain about.

       @tofugolem @emilymbender Metoo, and it's not just conservatives that disbelieve quite mundane, well established science. In Mastodon's view of the fedi, there's little context visible in threads, and each of us see a different number of replies. It's a bit of a hashup.

       @tomjennings @emilymbender Yes, there is also anti-science nonsense on the left (e.g. alternative medicine, naturopathy, anti-GMO, etc.), but if you think the two are remotely comparable in scope, you have a pretty extreme far-right bias.
