I wonder why youtube doesn't embed its ads in the video stream... I don't want to give them ideas but this is what I'd do if I were them. Are there some technical reasons why this isn't possible? They are the sort of company who can make people use new codecs and I don't see why one wouldn't allow splicing together videos at arbitrary positions.

@vic Likely would make serving personalized ads more difficult, with all the caching and stuff going on. And it wouldn't prevent people from skipping the ads - in fact it might make it easier? Ad-blockers could detect and skip them anyway, then what did they gain? Sponsor Block already exists and it lets you skip sponsored sections and similar that people have sourced from the community.

@copygirl Well it would be harder to skip no? They could randomize the position of the ad in the video and only use it for those unskippable ads.

@vic Randomly playing ads in a video? That would not go over well. Either it's at the beginning, or it's done à la Twitch where creators get to decide when they appear. It's also unlikely there wouldn't be some way to detect. Through JavaScript injection, a web request being made, or the DOM being manipulated. They have to find out whether the ad was actually watched, after all.Google is pushing for Web Environment Integrity for a reason. Now THAT could actually affect things. Now the internet just has to reject it, and anyone who tries to use it.

@copygirl I mean they kinda do already play ads randomly? At least I couldn't detect a pattern, try watching some longer music videos without adblocker, it cuts right into the song...If all the client gets is one request (for the video) how would you detect it?I don't know how caching would play into this tho...

@copygirl They do try to shove more and more ads into your face, at this point it might be worse than cable TV. Adblock is self defense.

@vic It's gotta be super lucrative, too. On TV the advertiser would just be like "eh, this will roughly reach this many people".Online, ad companies are probably collecting so much useful data, whether personalized or anonymous, about people's browsing habits.
