Story time: Many years ago, the Peabody Award people lobbied me to apply. They emailed me personally to say they were creating a podcasting category, and they thought Grammar Girl would be a good candidate. So I applied, which is not cheap and is time-consuming.And then ... they didn't give an award to anyone in that category. No one.I'm on some list, though, where I still get notifications that the award period is open, and every time I get a notification, I get angry all over again.

@grammargirl 🥉 Award fraud : If there was an application fee for an award they never gave out, I would think you’d be legally entitled to your money backHow many social media followers do you have now? 🪧 #PeabodyAwards

@grammargirl @AccordionBruce I was going to say the same thing. It borders on fraud, making people pay to apply for an award that no one receives.

@grammargirl @CStamp So, they encouraged you to apply, got your $200, and then didn’t award anyone. Did you get the money back? Pretty scammy, otherwise.

@MichaelPorter @CStamp Yup, that's what happened. To be clear, they just didn't give an award in that category. They gave awards in all the other categories.

@eco_amandine Thank you! I've won a bunch of awards. ❤️ I'm always happy to see others win them too; it was just seeing nobody win after being actively solicited that was galling.

All you kind people are making me feel like I have to defend the Peabody Awards a bit (darn you!).It's not a scam; it's a very prestigious award. I'm sure they got the application packages and thought none of the podcasters were up to their "high standards." But they should have had a better sense of that before soliciting us. To not give the award to anyone after asking people to apply was insulting and inconsiderate.

I actually remember thinking I couldn't possibly be doing Peabody quality work, but a lot of unbelievably good things had recently happened to me, so I got over it and believed they were serious.I mean, it seemed ridiculous that I had been on Oprah. It seemed ridiculous that I had been in the top-corner office of a major publisher with the top executives signing not just a book deal but a business deal. Why not a Peabody too?

@grammargirl I used to run a big music conference, second only to SXSW. It is a VERY common income stream for these conferences to take application fees, even when all the slots are taken or given to insiders. In other words, some of these acts have ZERO chance. Same for panelist applicants at events – this is just to build a list.Still, I'm shocked that Peabody Awards would do this. That's one of the few awards that matter ... sort of. ;)

@grammargirl You have inspired me to do an episode on awards. I've had it on the list for months, but there are so many of them, I didn't want my timing to be where one would think I'm attacking it.The bottom line, to me, is that listeners are the only thing that matters in radio/podcasting. Much like readers are what matters in books. We don't need Rolling Stone, or NYT, or anybody to give us a review, award, or chart position.

@davidhooper I'm sure people would love to read about that.I think if you win an award, the best thing you can do it try to make a huge, big PR thing out of it. I did a bad job of that for many of the awards I won, and looking back, it was a lost opportunity.

@grammargirl That is completely ridiculous and they should have refunded your money. On the other hand, people saying it's a scam; It's hard for me to believe this was a big money maker for them. They probably spent that much pursuing and researching these people.

One thing I do want to make clear though is that it wasn't some sort of personalized form invitation. I don't remember now whether it was a phone call or a very extensive email conversation, but the vibe was very much "we know your show, we think you're great, and you should apply."

@grammargirl At the very least they could have refunded the fees, even if they couldn't give back the time spent. And communication and an apology would not have gone amiss.

@grammargirl I wonder if someone was really excited about it and was trying to push the organization ahead of where it was ready to go and had it blow up on them to the point they couldn’t even reach back out with an apology of some sort.

@grammargirl I didn't win the Peabody Award either. I just found out about it while reading your comments. Obviously, I never applied. If I were you, I'd consider it awarding that you have helped so many people, anyway, so don't trip on the small stuff.

@grammargirl Yeah. Grammy Awards boost sales of records, but I think it's as much about the live performances and mention on a huge stage as anything. Do you feel your Podcaster HOF status has helped you to get more business/listeners? (or anything else?)

@grammargirl This sounds like the origin story for a grammar super villain. Grammar Girl's nemesis. She was spurned by the very people she vowed to help, so now she has dedicated her life to pointing out petty mistakes on the Peabody website.

@grammargirl It's fine to decide to back down on the award, but they should have reimbursed the applicants along with a nice little apology. One doesn't simply pocket the money and think "better luck next time."
