@jquillin this was a great read. I hope they are right that there is a return to real fashion criticism. The world needs quality journalism in this industry. Have been seeing some mind numbingly dumb stories this past week, some paired with horrifically bad photos, we need to do better as an industry. We need to care again.

@CynthiaA We need better fashion content. Even in the world of TikTok.

@jquillin the last paragraph of this piece 🙌 as someone who simply refuses to use tik tok and uses social media less and less. Honestly I miss the days where I looked forward to weekly columns from Robin Givhan, Teri Agins and @ChristinaBinkley - their writing shaped so much of what fashion was for me as a (non-fashion) professional & I don’t think that void has been filled personally.

@jquillin @kristenfanarakis I suspect the writing that Kristen is referring to wasn’t exactly criticism. We were writing about what works in the real world, why brands do things - we weren’t critiquing collections. Do I have that right, Kristen?

@ChristinaBinkley @kristenfanarakis For me, I’m counting high quality fashion content in my loose definition of criticism. If you do research and quote sources, you’re a critic in my book.

@jquillin that was a great piece! I totally share the feeling about fashion criticism, however I think it’s unlikely that we’ll go back to the heyday of fashion publications if the people in power don’t deem it necessary. But like @kristenfanarakis, the last sentence gives me hope for a future that values older, skillful people.

@jquillin if there was one thing I could change about fashion journalism it would be access trading for positive reviews which is rampant. A writer didn't like your collection? Toughen the fuck up.

@ChristinaBinkley @jquillin sorry I missed this the other day! Yes, CB - exactly 🎯 I don’t care about critiques/reviews of shows esp today when since 90% of what goes down a runway isn’t wearable (tho back then more was - another part of the problem today). I want useful info, things I can wear in real life, trends/garments placed in context of history/everyday life etc…

@jquillin @ChristinaBinkley I understand that the media landscape is diff - but I don’t feel like I get the equivalent of what Teri/Christina/Robin did today. It’s curated/informed/educational content. Silly videos do not fill this gap for me. It’s why I pull in so much history on my insta account & follow so many fashion history acts - i filter stuff thru my lens but it’s not the same & it’s a problem (to me anyway)

@jquillin @ChristinaBinkley — just got a fashion newsletter supposedly for women who work. The person who writes it notes how she doesn’t work in an office (and her suggestions show). This is what I’m talking about when I say I miss Christina/Teri/Robin - they wrote for women who like fashion but work in an office. These women aren’t wearing clownish oversized suits or sweatshirts (I don’t care how expensive it is if I showed up in a sweatshirt I would have been sent to HR). Maddening.

@jquillin @ChristinaBinkley I was already talking to an old colleague this morning about writing something for women who work/plan conferences - she’s bought all my pieces bc I have pockets that hold a big iPhone & other stuff. She’s like if you write a blog I’ll share with this Facebook group of event managers. I think I’m going to do a “real working women” series bc the majority of what’s out there is fashion for La La Land…

@jquillin @ChristinaBinkley after I moved to the banking side I had a client (all men 1 young gal) ask me to talk to the gal @ how she’s supp to dress for the office bc other men on the floor were making comments & they didn’t want how she dressed to hold her back. So much of it is the culture of the office/city/co - as someone who has worked in Boston/NYC & DC - later in my career I had clients in Cali (not wearing a jacket to a meeting was so bizarre to me at first - total no no w/ BOS clients

@jquillin @ChristinaBinkley DC is the most deliberately bland re fashion place I’ve ever worked. Boston there was an element of: if you appear to care too much about clothes it diminishes your intelligence - it was a very interesting fine line in retrospect. I don’t know how social media has changed that.

@kristenfanarakis @ChristinaBinkley It has a little. We have some great influencers like my friend Danielle (@blondeinthedistrict). But her focus isn’t corporate culture even though she has a govt day job. So I’m not sure how much influence these influencers have. My friend Alison used to run a great blog (DC Celine) but doesn’t anymore.
